St. J Upends Falcons

May 18, 2011

NEWPORT– The North Country girls tennis team lost their rematch to St. Johnsbury Academy on Tuesday 4-3.
Number two singles Deanna Brandstetter, number four singles Rhiannon Rosamillia, and the number two doubles team of Brian Treadwell and Rosie Wheeler all picked up wins against a very strong Hilltopper squad.
Number one singles Martha Petzoldt, number three singles Kelsey O’Donnell number five singles Alana Perry, and the number one doubles team of Mollie O’Keefe and Carlie Diette all took loses on the day.

Yellowjackets Sting Falcons 7-3

NEWPORT– Milton came in to town on Tuesday and dealt the North Country softball team their eighth straight loss by the score of 7-3.
"Defensively we struggled, we made too many errors which led to runs," said Coach Leslie Dunn, "Offensively it was better, we were hitting the ball, but we were hitting it right at somebody."
Emily Pecue and Katie Ste. Marie each had a hit for the Falcons.

Falcons Surge past Yellowjackets

NEWPORT– Jason Hatin is on fire. The sophomore outfielder is ten for his last eleven at bats, and has driven in ten RBI's, five of them coming in Tuesdays 16-6 win over Milton.
Coach Brian Bonvechio is more than pleased with the production he is getting from Hatin, but knows that the guys hitting in front of him are big part of his success.
"Miller and Blake are getting on sixty percent of the time, and he is coming through with big hits."
Speaking of Taylor Miller, he had three hits in the contest and also contributed three RBI's.

Irasburg debates wind project with VEC rep

IRASBURG – On Monday evening, residents faced off with representatives from Vermont Electric Corporative (VEC) and Green Mountain Power (GMP) over the Kingdom Community Wind Project. The meeting, held at the town hall, was part of the regular select board meeting.
Answering questions raised by Dr. Ron Holland, David Hallquist of VEC said the actual cost of generating power, after figuring in the capacity factor is between nine and ten cents a kilowatt, which is before any renewable energy credits.

Former Trooper Arraigned on Sexual Assault Charge

NEWPORT – Mark Beezup, 55, of Derby, was arraigned in Orleans County Criminal Court Tuesday on two felonies: sexual assault–parental role, and lewd and lascivious conduct with a child.
Beezup denied the charges and was released on conditions that he not have any contact with children under the age of 16, other than his own, per orders of the Department of Children and Families.
Beezup was accused of sexual behavior by his girlfriend’s daughter, now 14, who claimed the incidents began when she was 12.
Beezup lived with the girl and her mother for approximately six years.

5th Place Finish for Falcon Girls Golf

NEWPORT–Eight schools participated at the 24th NC Girls Golf Invitational at the Newport Country Club on Monday, May 16th.
North Country placed 5th, behind the scoring of captain Bailey Walker, who shot a 101, and Eilish Muir with a 118.
Both juniors dealt with some challenging weather in the 18 hole tournament.
Bailey carded a 45 on the back nine, one of her best scores for the 9 track.
Eilish continues to whittle away on her score, improving every tournament. St Johnsbury took 1st place, followed by Harwood and Essex.

Conrad Valentino Taber

Taber–– Conrad Valentino, 84, of Westport, Massachusetts, died peacefully in Fall River, Massachusetts on May 13, 2011. A celebration of his life will be held in Westport, Massachusetts at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Police Investigate Missing Funds from Albany Fire Department

ALBANY — Jennifer Tolman, treasurer for the Albany Fire Department and a member of its school board, sent a public letter of apology to the Newport Daily Express recently on the heels of allegations that she may be responsible for the loss of over $6,000 from the town's fire department.
Following a recent audit, Fire Chief Donald Peters confirmed that he reported the findings to the Vermont State Police and suspected that charges either would be or have been filed against Tolman.
The Newport Express has received reports that the money has been paid back.

Lake Region Sets Personal Bests in St. Albans

On Friday May 13 the Lake Region Boys competed at the Bobwhite Relays. The boys took 16 athletes to this event and competed in 6 field relays and 7 track relays. There were 12 different schools at this meet from all three divisions. The Rangers set many personal records at this meet and beat a few of the schools relay records from past Bobwhite Meets.
