DERBY LINE - Trustees at the Derby Line Village Annual Meeting Tuesday, April 1 informed the two dozen attendees that the select board rescinded a vote taken at a prior select board meeting.

Former North Country Music Educator Returns

NEWPORT CITY - For 16 years Glory Reinstein, formerly known as Glory Douglass, worked as a music educator at North Country Union High School. Reinstein, now a teacher at Essex High School, will grace the North Country stage one more time as a music educator Saturday afternoon.

Derby Select Board To Revisit D.L. Zoning Change Proposal

The Derby Select Board decided Monday evening to hold another hearing on changing the zoning bylaw in Derby Line. Two weeks ago the select board voted to deny the changes the Derby Line trustees wanted, leading to an uproar of residents and village leaders.

State Senate Passes Involuntary Medication Bill

DERBY - The Vermont State Senate has passed a controversial involuntary medication bill and sent it to the House Judiciary Committee. The mental health bill focuses on people in need of help but can’t be forced to take drugs and involuntarily commit them to a hospital. Representative Vicki Strong said she understands the bill’s intent, but has problems with the language.

School Choice Funding Raises Hackles

BARTON - School choice was a hot topic for Lake Region board members at Monday’s education-legislation summit.
School choice allows students the opportunity to apply for admission to other school districts. The student has the option to transfer to any school district in the state. The Legislature has created a formula based on student enrollment that determines how many students the school is required to enroll each year.

Small School Aid In Jeopardy

BARTON - A legislator/educator summit held at Lake Region Union High School on Monday evening was well attended. Faculty, administrators, and school board members were able to ask questions and share information with area legislators.

Albany Fire Department Recovering

April 1, 2014

ALBANY - Last August firefighters from this small town, with the assistance of other communities, battled a blaze a little close to home - their own fire station.
The intentionally-set fire destroyed much of the department’s equipment, including its fire trucks. Thanks to other communities, who lent trucks and other gear, the Albany Fire Department got back on its feet in two days.

Penny Candy Store Coming To Downtown Newport

NEWPORT CITY - Frank and Michelle Richardi, owners of Lago Trattoria, the popular Italian restaurant on Main Street, are in the process of opening a candy store. The store will be in a section of their downtown restaurant.
The Richardis will use local products to make 10 to 15 homemade in-house fudges.

State Officials Host Meetings To Plan For Spring Flooding

Spring ice jams are unpredictable.
That’s the word from Paul Sisson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Burlington.
During a telephone interview Monday Sisson said with warmer temperatures and the start of slow daily snowmelt, ice jams are possible this week.

Public Health Week Celebrated Locally

The waves of change in healthy living and health care are underway. To spread awareness and celebrate healthy living, National Public Health week is being celebrated once again locally. This year it’s happening April 7 through April 11. Events will take place at Newport’s Emory Hebard State Building.
