The State of Vermont will pay off its $2.2 million debt for reconstruction of the North Country Career Center, which leaves board members reassessing financial priorities. Read about it in Monday's edition of The Newport Daily Express for May 6, 2013.
ORLEANS-There was a good old-fashioned donnybrook at Lake Region Thursday afternoon, as Danville and LR squared off in high school softball action.
By the time everyone in attendance finally exhaled, the host Rangers had escaped with an exciting 9-8 victory.
Danville starter Kaylynn Zangla took the loss, striking out four without allowing a walk. Hannah Leroux went the distance for LR, allowing 6 hits, striking out 5 and walking 6.
LR moves to 4-2 with the win, and hosts undefeated and defending D2 champion Fairfax Tuesday. Danville evens their record at 4-4.
BASEBALL
MVU 8, NCU 1
NEWPORT–Missisquoi scored six runs in the first two innings and never looked back, defeating North Country on Thursday afternoon.
Wyatt Prue took the loss for the Falcons, Nick Sicard had two hits and Chase LaCourse drove in the lone NCU run.
Sophomore Bryce Carter got his first taste of pitching at the varsity level, working four innings of relief.
On Friday, the Falcons fell again by the same 8-1 score, this time to South Burlington.

According to multiple news outlets across the sate, including the Burlington Free Press and WPTZ, News Channel 5, local police have cited three area athletes in a local soda bottle bomb explosion.
Joshua Tompkins (19), Jason Hatin (18) and Collin Brennon (16) were cited with possession of destructive devices and unlawful mischief, according to Newport Police.
The trio are scheduled to appear in court May 7, 2013.

NEWPORT-With two outs and Madison Mosher on first base, Missy Morse drilled a ball deep to left-center in the bottom of the 7th to bring home the game winning RBI and give North Country their second win of the season, a 2-1 victory over Missisquoi Valley Union.

Traffic accidents jump dramatically at this time of year and students are cautioned to drive smart and drive safe during prom, graduation, and throughout the summer. Fire, police and ambulance personnel were out in the warm sun yesterday to show North Country High students what a "real" accident looks like.

ORLEANS–he Lake Region golf teams got their season rolling on Wednesday, as they hosted Hazen, Richford and Enosburg at the Orleans Country Club.
The boys took home the win with a team score of 209, followed by Hazen 233 and Enosburg at 256.
Richford had only three players, who came in at 199.
Carl Oberg led the pack, medaling with a 46, Noah Racine and Holden Poirier each shot 52, Dusin Bodette had a 57, Derek Rodgers a 67, and Connor Gaboriault hit the clubhouse with a 76.

NEWPORT–While the weather conditions were fantastic, the end result was not as bright as the shinning sun, as the North Country Falcons ran into a very good Montpelier tennis team on Wednesday, losing the match 6-1.
The girls will host Lake Region next Wednesday in a rematch from their contest last month.
It should be an interesting bout, since both teams were missing their number one player, amongst others, the last time these two teams met.
Game time is at 3:30.
