There was an upset during this year’s Town Meeting in Westfield. Incumbent Selectman Richard Degre faced off with Anne Lazor. The first vote count showed a 27 to 27 tie and the second count had Lazor walking away with 28 votes and Degre with 25.

The Newport City council has scheduled a special meeting for Monday at 6:30pm. Aldermen John Vincent and Denis Chenette along with Mayor Paul Monette will discuss the next step to take to replace Steven Vincent and Neil Morrissette who resigned from the council on Tuesday evening.
Long time Jay clerk and treasurer Tara Morse has resigned her position with one year left on the three year term. Morse will take over management of the Jay Country Store. On Tuesday Morse said goodbye at town meeting, receiving a rousing standing ovation for her work as clerk and treasurer.
The Newport City council may hold a special meeting to discuss the two vacancies that occurred when aldermen Steven Vincent and Neil Morrissette submitted resignations on Tuesday evening. The move took Mayor Paul Monette off guard who was handed the letters of resignation.
The Barton Fire Department was called out late Tuesday evening to a fire on Roaring Brook Road. The empty barn belonging to Harvey Lyons was fully engulfed in flames when the department arrived. Fire chief Kevin Tartaglio said the cause of the fire is undetermined.
Former alderman Denis Chenette has been elected to the Newport City Council, tabulating the second most votes to win one of two open seats. He narrowly beat Jacques Roberge with 277 votes against 253 for the incumbent.
