Harwood Tops North Country 4-3 in Home Opener

NEWPORT–The North Country Falcons' boys tennis team played their home opener against the Harwood Highlanders on Monday afternoon at Prouty Beach, but unfortunately for the hometown team, they fell just a bit short, losing 4-3 to drop their record 1-1 on the year.
"We're very dependent on the first four singles spots, and it is kind of a fickle thing because they can't win all of their matches," said NCU coach Gary Atchinson. "We were right in it with both of our doubles matches, and with a few breaks either way it could have turned out either way.",

Dirty 40 Productions Adds New Race to Cycling Calender

NEWPORT–There are no two ways about it; Anthony Moccia and Heidi Myers are cycling enthusiasts.
It is not uncommon to see them cruising around the Northeast Kingdom on two wheels, exploring new roads, or traversing over old favorites.
Last year the pair looked to put that love of cycling to good use, and they created the Dirty 40 race, and named their new company Dirty 40 Productions.
This year they have added a new race to their schedule called the Rasputitsa. To find out about it, see the Express on Wednesday 4-9-14.

Coventry’s David Gratton Heading to Hoop Shoot Nationals

NEWPORT–If you attend the Coventry school's after-school program, which is held in the gymnasium, you might see a student standing on the corner of the free throw line practicing his shooting technique.
He is a quiet fellow, and he may be sporting a shirt bearing a character from the Marvel Universe, or perhaps a Celtics logo with his favorite player Jeff Green's last name and number on the back.
His name is David Gratton.

Morin, Bernier Heading to Nationals With U-16 Shamrocks

MANCHESTER, NH–The U-16 Vermont Shamrock team is heading to the USA Hockey Tier II National Tournament for third straight year, as they defeated the Connecticut Stars 4-0 to win the New England Regional Championships on Sunday afternoon.
Vermont's U-19 team also made it to the regional finals, but they fell 1-0 and had to settle for second place.
There is still an outside chance that the U-19's could make it to Nationals, but that would require another team that qualified to drop out.
This year's National Championships will be held in Buffalo, NY in early April.

DeLaBruere and Paul Look to Their Hockey Futures

North Country hockey players Ryan Paul and Ross DeLaBruere have not waited long to start exploring their future options in the game of hockey.
Prior to their appearance in the Essex Rotary Classic All-Star game, the pair, along with their coach Ryan Jacobs, took a trip down south to skate with a couple of junior teams, the Junior Bruins out of Boston, and the Junior Monarchs from Manchester, NH.

Falcons Have Strong Showing at Essex Rotary Classic

ESSEX–Five members for the North Country hockey program who headed over to the Essex Skating facility on Saturday to take part in the 2014 Essex Rotary Key Bank Hockey All-Star Classic.
Crystal Moss and Corrina Cota represented the girls team, while Ross DeLaBruere, Ryan Paul and Nate Marsh were there for the boys.

North Country Snowboarders Wrap Up Season at State Meets

North Country had a solid year of riding and competing during the 2014 season, despite the beginning of the season being full of weather-related cancellations.
A team that maintains a strong philosophy developed by their coaches Natalie Guillette and Ryan Anderson, allowed the athletes to focus on being good citizens, while also maintaining their physical and mental health, as all athletes should.

Fourth Quarter Scoring Sends Randolph Past Lake Region and into the Finals

BARRE-Lake Region's quest for a spot in the 2014 Division III Finals fell one game short as they lost to the Randolph Galloping Ghosts 70-59.
Clint Provoncha had a great game for the Rangers, scoring 24 points, that included six three pointers.

Falcons Lose in Semi-Finals for Third Straight Year

ESSEX–The biggest game of the weekend for North Country sports fans took place deep in Hornet Country, as the Falcons and the Essex Hornets took to the ice with a trip to the Gutterson Field House for the Division I State Title on the line.
A sluggish start proved to be the Falcons' undoing, as Essex notched two goals in the first period en route to a 5-2 win.

Ranger Defense, Depth Stifles Wolves 59-42

ORLEANS-The rematch was no contest. After a close regular season tilt with visiting Peoples Academy, the play-off sequel was a mismatch. A consistent press and a long bench paved the way to an impressive 17 point win over PA in the Division III quarter-finals.
Lake Region got a big boost from the season’s largest crowd in Orleans as the Don Harter Memorial Gymnasium was nearly packed and emotion was high as the contest tipped off.
