North Country Picks Up Third Loss Against Middlebury

April 28, 2014

NEWPORT-The North Country boys tennis team returned to action on Monday after their spring break.
Their opponent on this lightly overcast day was the Middlebury Tigers, and it was the visiting squad coming up with the 4-3 win to improve to 1-1 on the year.
The play on Monday was actually quite even, but having to forfeit the number two doubles match is what did the Falcons in on this day, as it was the deciding factor in the match.

Fairfax Scores Early and Often, Tops Lake Region 27-4

April 27, 2014

ORLEANS–BFA Fairfax scored twelve runs in the top of the first inning, and that was more then enough as the Lady Bullets defeated the Lady Rangers 27-4.
"It was a miserable, miserable, miserable day," said LR coach Matt Tinker. "We need to get mentally tougher when we are in the middle of a bad inning, and get of quicker than we are. Call me crazy, but I think we did do some good things against the best pitcher we are going to face all year, and I am looking forward to seeing them again when the weather is warmer."

Lake Region got on the board in the fourth, but the Bullets restored the four-run advantage with a run in the top of the fifth.
That would be the end of the day for Ranger starter Matt Messier, who finished his outing striking out ten, walking three and allowing three hits.

Falcons Even Record at 1-1 After Loss to Essex

April 24, 2014

NEWPORT–The North Country Falcons baseball team played their home opener against Essex on Thursday, and despite a strong pitching performance from Wyatt Prue, fell to the Hornets by the score of 2-0.
"We played well," said NCU coach Brian Bonvechio. "We made a couple of mistakes early, but they didn't seem to hurt us. As cold as it was, it was difficult to get a good grip on anything today."

Harwood Tops North Country 4-3 in Home Opener

April 14, 2014

NEWPORT–The North Country Falcons' boys tennis team played their home opener against the Harwood Highlanders on Monday afternoon at Prouty Beach, but unfortunately for the hometown team, they fell just a bit short, losing 4-3 to drop their record 1-1 on the year.
"We're very dependent on the first four singles spots, and it is kind of a fickle thing because they can't win all of their matches," said NCU coach Gary Atchinson. "We were right in it with both of our doubles matches, and with a few breaks either way it could have turned out either way.",

Dirty 40 Productions Adds New Race to Cycling Calender

April 8, 2014

NEWPORT–There are no two ways about it; Anthony Moccia and Heidi Myers are cycling enthusiasts.
It is not uncommon to see them cruising around the Northeast Kingdom on two wheels, exploring new roads, or traversing over old favorites.
Last year the pair looked to put that love of cycling to good use, and they created the Dirty 40 race, and named their new company Dirty 40 Productions.
This year they have added a new race to their schedule called the Rasputitsa. To find out about it, see the Express on Wednesday 4-9-14.

His name is David Gratton.

Morin, Bernier Heading to Nationals With U-16 Shamrocks

March 24, 2014

MANCHESTER, NH–The U-16 Vermont Shamrock team is heading to the USA Hockey Tier II National Tournament for third straight year, as they defeated the Connecticut Stars 4-0 to win the New England Regional Championships on Sunday afternoon.
Vermont's U-19 team also made it to the regional finals, but they fell 1-0 and had to settle for second place.
There is still an outside chance that the U-19's could make it to Nationals, but that would require another team that qualified to drop out.
This year's National Championships will be held in Buffalo, NY in early April.
