Calm, Relaxed Basketball Crucial to UCA’s Success

February 26, 2013

NEWPORT–It has been a little while since the UCA boys have hosted a home play-off game, and after a season that left the team with a 14-6 record, the third ranked Crusaders are more than ready to welcome South Royalton to the North Country gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
"We are obviously excited at the chance to start the play-offs with a home game," said UCA coach Tony DeLaBruere. "Everybody is calm right now, and we need to keep doing what we have been doing and when we relax on the court we definitely have better success."

Bonvechio Resigns, Updated!

February 24, 2013

NEWPORT–After receiving confirmation from athletic Mike Kiser Sunday evening, I was able to speak to former North Country boy's Varsity head coach Brian Bonvechio on Monday, who said he was indeed departing from the program.
Said Bonvechio, "The reason that I am leaving the position is that I have lost my passion for the game as it stands now.
"There is too much emphasis on the one-on-one aspect of the game, and not enough focus on the team aspect.
"If I am not into it, then it is not fair to the players, the school and the administration for to me to still be out there coaching."

Craftsbury Honors Outgoing Senior Frank Spiese

February 24, 2013

CRAFTSBURY–Although the Chargers lost their final game of the season 59-45 to finish the year at 11-9, the bigger story was senior Frank Spiese.
Frank is the only basketball player graduating from Craftsbury this year, and the folks at the Academy gave him one heck of a send off on Friday night.

Lady Chargers Lock Up the Number Three Seed in D IV

February 24, 2013

CRAFTSBURY–The Lady Chargers jumped out to 20-4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, defeating South Royalton 46-24 to finish the year with a 16-4 record, good for the number three seed in Division IV.
"We like to come out and defend the home court, especially when a team is coming in from a far distance," said CA coach Rick Thomas. "We like to hammer those bus legs. We are a pressing team, that is what we have become and that is how we play the best."

Falcons End Season With Loss to Champlain Valley

February 22, 2013

NEWPORT–With a trip to the Division I boy's basketball play-offs on the line, the North Country Falcons came up a little short, losing to Champlain Valley Union 61-46 to put an end to what has been a trying 2012-2013 season.
"It was very frustrating," said NCU coach Brian Bonvechio. "We have a lot more talent than we showed as a basketball team.
"A lot of it's my fault for not being able to bring the team together and make then work together, but we just never found that chemistry on the court or off."

By the time two periods had been played, the score was knotted at 3-3, with Ross DeLaBruere having scored the third Falcon goal.

Seniors Celebrate With 69-49 Win Over BFA Fairfax

February 20, 2013

ORLEANS–Whether they were motivated by the Lake Region Pep Band's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner or not, I will never know, but the Ranger boys came out firing on all cylinders, out-scoring BFA Fairfax 25-6 in the opening quarter en-route to the 69-49 win over the Bullets.
"We really competed tonight," said junior Clint Provoncha. "We have not had as good of an effort as we wanted in the last few games. Now it is getting a lot better as we start making our move towards the play-offs."

Lake Region Squeaks By Northfield 44-40

February 19, 2013

ORLEANS-It wasn't easy, and at times the game looked to be doubt, but the Lady Rangers were able to strap on their work boots, dig deep and grind out a 44-40 win over the Northfield Marauders.
"Overall, we had a game plan, but our perimeter shooting wasn't what it was the last couple of outings, so we had to find some other places to get points," said LRU coach Mark Tinker. "It was by hook or by crook, but we got the offense when we needed it and our defense created some chances for us."
Drew Neal led all scorers with 26 points, while McMullen had a team-high 20 for Northfield.
