Total Team Effort in UCA Boys’ Victory Over Concord, Girls Fall in Opener

NEWPORT–Two games, two completely different outcomes for the UCA boy's and girl's basketball teams on Saturday afternoon as they squared off against Concord at the Newport Elementary School.
In the opening game, the Wildcat girls took control early and never let up, winning decisively 38-13.
In the second game, the roles were reversed, and it was UCA administering the punishment as they handed their foes a very one-sided 64-22 loss.
Starting with the girl's game, Concord scored early and often in the first quarter racking up twelve points to UCA's two.

Vikings No Match for Rangers’ Speed and Skill

ORLEANS–Lake Region got their 2012-2013 campaign off to a great start, defeating Lyndon Institute 61-53 to move to 1-0 on the season.
"We knew coming in that this was going to be one of the top teams we face this season," said head coach James Ingalls. "One through five, they have a very quick team and my guys knew they would have to play a ball game to be in this game and take it, and they did."
Play got going with LI's Kyle Cipollone hitting two from the charity stripe, followed by LR's Dennis Newland’s bucket, then another two form the line by Cipollone.

DeLaBruere’s Late Three Sends UCA Home Victorious

CRAFTSBURY–Chris DeLaBruere's game winning three pointer with twenty-seven seconds left to play was the difference as UCA picked up their second win over Craftsbury, defeating the Chargers 51-48 in a very exciting D-IV match-up.
"I knew that the shot had to be made, and I took it upon myself to make it because I had been shooting hot tonight and I got lucky," said DeLaBruere

Starters, Bench Combine in 49-24 Charger Victory

CRAFTSBURY–In the second meeting of the season between the UCA and Craftsbury girl's basketball teams, the Chargers once again flexed their muscle, defeating the Crusaders 49-24.
"We have been working on playing as a team to get everybody used to each other, and that was what was working for us tonight," said Craftsbury's Sarah Dunbar.
Much like the first go around, the opening quarter was a fairly close affair.
Janet Bohannon opened the scoring, making one basket followed by two more from the line.

North Country Wins Easily, Defeat Lyndon 56-29

NEWPORT–The North Country girls basketball team opened up their season in fine fashion, defeating the Lyndon Institute Vikings 56-29 on Tuesday evening.
Coach Christiane Brown utilized her entire roster in the win, something that should provide a good springboard for the rest of the season.
"We are going to win as a team and we are going to lose as a team, from the five girls on the floor to the ladies on the bench," said Brown after the game. "I really emphasize the importance of us on the bench are the sixth players and the fans are the seventh."

Craftsbury Academy Opens WWII Memorial Gymnasium

CRAFTSBURY–The moment I walked into the brand new World War II Memorial Gymnasium at Craftsbury Academy, the electricity was palpable.
Principal Merri Greenia was greeting fans at the door, dispensing tickets and programs with an extra twinkle in her eye.
And who could blame her.
After months of hard work, and weeks of anticipation, this was the big night, the night the entire community had waited for; The first home games of the 2012-2013 Craftsbury Academy basketball season.
And what a night it was.

Falcons Give D I Rebel Cougars a Scare in 3-1 Loss

JAY–Well, they came as advertised.
The North Country girls hockey team more than held there own against Division I South Burlington/MMU, but fell just a little short of their goal, losing the contest 3-1.
"I think we skated with them for two, two and a quarter periods, but we just did not finish our chances early," said coach Claude Paul.
With the merger of So. Burlington and Mount Mansfield set to last just one year, the visiting squad took to the ice in their special sky blue commemorative jerseys to face the improved Falcons.

Crusaders Open Season With 46-41 Win Over Chargers

NEWPORT–A hot start by Paul Saaman and a solid team performance from the line in the fourth fueled the UCA boy's 46-41 win over Craftsbury in the two team's season opener on Saturday afternoon.
"I was very happy to start out with a win and the boys definitely deserved it," said UCA coach Tony DeLaBruere. "We started out great and basically the first and fourth quarters were one game and the third and the fourth were another.
"I love playing against Craftsbury, their fans are very intelligent and passionate, and like I said, it is nice to start out with a win."

Second Quarter Scoring Sends Craftsbury Over UCA 44-20

NEWPORT–After a tight start, Craftsbury’s girl's basketball team opened up their play in the second quarter, and handed the UCA Crusaders a 44-20 loss to open up the season.
"The girl's effort was huge," said coach Rick Thomas. "We want to be a pressure-up team, work our defensive sets, and create offense off of our defense. That is our signature, that is how we want to play."
As mentioned, things were close early, as the score was at 3-2 UCA for a while before the girls stated to get into the flow of the game.

Falcons Reload for Big 2012-2013 Campaign

JAY–After a fantastic season in his first year at the helm of the North Country girl's hockey team, coach Clause Paul's squad has added even more horsepower to an already potent line-up.
The Falcons have gotten stronger in every facet of the game, from defense, to offense, but most notably, in goal.
Last season Tara Langmaid did an admirable job of stepping into Meghan Simpson's skates after Simpson went down due to injury, but at times her inexperience showed.
