Falcons Upset Bellows Falls 1-0

October 28, 2012

BELLOWS FALLS– In the biggest surprise of the weekend, the seventh ranked North Country field hockey team knocked off number two Bellows Falls (11-2) 1-0.
"We called a time out with five minutes left and I told them that we didn't drive all of this way for nothing, that we were not leaving without a win, and we got it," said a joyous coach Chantelle Bouchard.
Brittany Fortier scored with 1:55 left to play in regulation to give her team the win.
The goal came after a dash-mark hit, which Brittany Verge put into the circle.

Sadly for the fans in Ranger Country, it was their much loved, much admired Lake Region boys, as the Eagles (7-7-1) tallied two goals in the final ten minutes of the contest to advance into the Division II semi-finals.
"I thought it was an excellent match," said coach Tom Evans. "It definitely could have gone either way and it happened to go their’s, so hats off to them."

Three Minute Lapse Proves Costly for Falcons Against Tide

October 25, 2012

BARRE–Spaulding's Julia Ormsby's goal two minutes and nine seconds into the first half was all the eighth seeded Crimson Tided needed as they held on for the remaining seventy-two-plus minutes to defeat North Country 1-0 in the opening round of the Division I play-offs.
"We played hard, but you never get those goals back," said coach Peter Alexander. "We had eight chances to clear or get something done, and you could see it coming.
"But, from that moment on, I thought we competed and had some decent chances, and I am very pleased with the effort."

CRAFTSBURY–Sisters Elaine and Sarah Dunbar each had a goal as Craftsbury Academy defeated UCA 2-0 in playdown action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Chargers controlled play in the early going, and their pressure paid off when Sarah Dunbar opened the scoring, sending a rebound past United Christian goaltender Lydia Samaan.
In the second, with the score still 1-0 CA, UCA picked up their game and started to pressure the Chargers.
But the home team did not buckle, instead mounting their own assault on the UCA net.

Senior striker Lauren Nesshoever took advantage of an early lapse in No. 4 Lake Region's defensive unit. Nesshoever pocked a give-and-go 10 minutes into the match to give the No. 13 seeded Otters an early edge.

West Rutland Edges Crusaders in 1-0 Heartbreaker

October 23, 2012

NEWPORT–The sight after the game of an exhausted Paul Samaan laying on the ground, inhaler in hand, summed up the effort that the UCA boys gave in their tough-luck 1-0 loss to West Rutland Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the Division IV soccer play-offs.
"The boys gave everything they had today, but you still hate to lose a game like this 1-0," said coach Alyssa DeLaBruere.
UCA matched their opponents step for step, chance for chance, but in the end a squibbler that got past Chris DeLaBruere decided the contest.

Lady Rangers Roll Wildcats 4-0 in Urie’s Absence

October 21, 2012

ORLEANS–To say it has been an interesting couple of days for the 11-3 Lake Region girls soccer team would be an understatement.
As was reported on our website this past Friday, head coach Brad Urie was suspended from coaching his team for the remainder of the 2012 season.
Filling in for him since Thursday's practice was athletic director Eric Degre, who along with boy’s varsity coach Tom Evans, were calling the shots on a gorgeous Saturday morning for the Lady Rangers regular season finale.

Stowe Spoils North Country’s Home Play-off Plans

October 21, 2012

NEWPORT–This past Friday, it took the Stowe Raiders (7-5-2) all of four minutes to dash the North Country girls soccer team's hopes of a home play-off game, as the Raiders scored a pair of goals in said time frame to defeat the Falcons (8-5-1) 2-1 in the regular season's closing contest.
"I thought we played really hard and I thought there were a lot of fouls called, and I know you can't blame that, but they had a lot more then we did, but that is just how the game goes," said coach Joe Batista.
