Falcon Wrestlers Compete in Only Home Meet of the Season

DERBY–The North Country wrestling team welcomed St. Johnsbury Academy and Champlain Valley Union to IROC for their lone home meet of the year on Tuesday night.
The night got underway with round one of action, pitting CVU against St. Johnsbury in their first matches of the evening, as the the Falcons stood in the wings, watching and waiting for their turn on the mat.
After the two visitors wrapped up, coach Chris Mandigo took to the mic to honor his seniors, Trevor Roberts, Josh Tompkins and Makenzie Steele.
After the ceremony, the Falcon-Redhawk matches got underway.

Duncan, Hatin Lead Falcons Past MVU 94-90

NEWPORT–The weekend's most anticipated game in Orleans County had to be the showdown between MVU and North Country in boy's basketball action.
The NCU gym was packed with the biggest crowd I have ever witnessed, all waiting to see how the new look Falcons fared against the state's top player Matthieu St.Amour and the rest of the Thunderbirds.
Players from Lake Region and UCA flooded into the gym, eager for play to begin.

Three Point Night for Morley in North Country’s 3-2 Win

JAY–Whitney Bernier poked home a loose puck on the left side of the net with 7:49 remaining to complete North Country's 3-2 come from behind win over Middlebury in girl's hockey action on Saturday evening.
The Falcons were not at full strength for the contest as multiple players were absent, most notably defenseman Emily Doty, who was attending a school-related function.
Doty's absence forced coach Claude Paul to move some players around, but the coach was able to mix and match with success and the team moved their record to 1-1.

Total Team Effort in UCA Boys’ Victory Over Concord, Girls Fall in Opener

NEWPORT–Two games, two completely different outcomes for the UCA boy's and girl's basketball teams on Saturday afternoon as they squared off against Concord at the Newport Elementary School.
In the opening game, the Wildcat girls took control early and never let up, winning decisively 38-13.
In the second game, the roles were reversed, and it was UCA administering the punishment as they handed their foes a very one-sided 64-22 loss.
Starting with the girl's game, Concord scored early and often in the first quarter racking up twelve points to UCA's two.

Vikings No Match for Rangers’ Speed and Skill

ORLEANS–Lake Region got their 2012-2013 campaign off to a great start, defeating Lyndon Institute 61-53 to move to 1-0 on the season.
"We knew coming in that this was going to be one of the top teams we face this season," said head coach James Ingalls. "One through five, they have a very quick team and my guys knew they would have to play a ball game to be in this game and take it, and they did."
Play got going with LI's Kyle Cipollone hitting two from the charity stripe, followed by LR's Dennis Newland’s bucket, then another two form the line by Cipollone.

DeLaBruere’s Late Three Sends UCA Home Victorious

CRAFTSBURY–Chris DeLaBruere's game winning three pointer with twenty-seven seconds left to play was the difference as UCA picked up their second win over Craftsbury, defeating the Chargers 51-48 in a very exciting D-IV match-up.
"I knew that the shot had to be made, and I took it upon myself to make it because I had been shooting hot tonight and I got lucky," said DeLaBruere

Starters, Bench Combine in 49-24 Charger Victory

CRAFTSBURY–In the second meeting of the season between the UCA and Craftsbury girl's basketball teams, the Chargers once again flexed their muscle, defeating the Crusaders 49-24.
"We have been working on playing as a team to get everybody used to each other, and that was what was working for us tonight," said Craftsbury's Sarah Dunbar.
Much like the first go around, the opening quarter was a fairly close affair.
Janet Bohannon opened the scoring, making one basket followed by two more from the line.

North Country Wins Easily, Defeat Lyndon 56-29

NEWPORT–The North Country girls basketball team opened up their season in fine fashion, defeating the Lyndon Institute Vikings 56-29 on Tuesday evening.
Coach Christiane Brown utilized her entire roster in the win, something that should provide a good springboard for the rest of the season.
"We are going to win as a team and we are going to lose as a team, from the five girls on the floor to the ladies on the bench," said Brown after the game. "I really emphasize the importance of us on the bench are the sixth players and the fans are the seventh."

Craftsbury Academy Opens WWII Memorial Gymnasium

CRAFTSBURY–The moment I walked into the brand new World War II Memorial Gymnasium at Craftsbury Academy, the electricity was palpable.
Principal Merri Greenia was greeting fans at the door, dispensing tickets and programs with an extra twinkle in her eye.
And who could blame her.
After months of hard work, and weeks of anticipation, this was the big night, the night the entire community had waited for; The first home games of the 2012-2013 Craftsbury Academy basketball season.
And what a night it was.
