Crusaders Open Season With 46-41 Win Over Chargers

December 9, 2012

NEWPORT–A hot start by Paul Saaman and a solid team performance from the line in the fourth fueled the UCA boy's 46-41 win over Craftsbury in the two team's season opener on Saturday afternoon.
"I was very happy to start out with a win and the boys definitely deserved it," said UCA coach Tony DeLaBruere. "We started out great and basically the first and fourth quarters were one game and the third and the fourth were another.
"I love playing against Craftsbury, their fans are very intelligent and passionate, and like I said, it is nice to start out with a win."

Second Quarter Scoring Sends Craftsbury Over UCA 44-20

December 9, 2012

NEWPORT–After a tight start, Craftsbury’s girl's basketball team opened up their play in the second quarter, and handed the UCA Crusaders a 44-20 loss to open up the season.
"The girl's effort was huge," said coach Rick Thomas. "We want to be a pressure-up team, work our defensive sets, and create offense off of our defense. That is our signature, that is how we want to play."
As mentioned, things were close early, as the score was at 3-2 UCA for a while before the girls stated to get into the flow of the game.

Falcons Reload for Big 2012-2013 Campaign

December 6, 2012

JAY–After a fantastic season in his first year at the helm of the North Country girl's hockey team, coach Clause Paul's squad has added even more horsepower to an already potent line-up.
The Falcons have gotten stronger in every facet of the game, from defense, to offense, but most notably, in goal.
Last season Tara Langmaid did an admirable job of stepping into Meghan Simpson's skates after Simpson went down due to injury, but at times her inexperience showed.

Increased Numbers Heighten Expectations for Falcon Wrestling

December 5, 2012

NEWPORT–After a seventh place finish in their return to full time varsity status last year, the North Country wrestling team is hoping that this season's team can build on that success and do even better during the 2012-2013 campaign.
"I think we have a good chance of doing a lot better this year than last," said coach Chris Mandigo. "Last year we won a couple of dual meets, this year I expect to do a lot better."

Excitement’s the Name of the Game for NCU This Season

December 4, 2012

NEWPORT–When was the last time you saw a member of the North Country basketball team dunk a ball?
In the three years since I have been covering the team I had yet to see it happen, but when I stopped by the NCU gym to chat with coach Brian Bonvechio, I finally saw it.
Freshman Kendrick Gray soared down the lane, went up, and came down with a thunderous one-handed slam, ushering in a new era and attitude of Falcon basketball.

Falcons Hope Doing the Little Things Will Make a Difference

December 4, 2012

NEWPORT–This year it is going to be about the doing the little things right for the North Country girl's basketball team.
"I emphasized to the girls that the little things are going to make a difference this season," said coach Christiane Brown. "Making our lay-ups, pushing the ball forward, not losing who we are guarding and finding a body to box out. The little things are going to be what puts us over the top this season.
"I want us to put points on the board, but it is going to be all of the things that lead up to that are what's important to me."

Ryan Hryckiewicz; From VT to Vienna on a Snowboard

December 2, 2012

It is no secret that the many of the athletes that adorn the pages of local and statewide newspapers come from team-based sports.
Everyone loves football, soccer, hockey, basketball, baseball etc..., and those sports do help sell papers, mainly due to the sheer volume of players that can be featured from game-to-game.
On any given day, someone new can be the hero.
In individual sports, such as skiing and snowboarding, you can either be the hero or the goat, depending on what kind of day you have.
A few great runs, someone else misses a slalom, and you win.

"We have covered North Country and Lake Region games before, and both schools were very receptive to the idea of having us cover them," said founding member Eric Berry.
Beginning with the winter sports season, NSN will feature twenty games, covering the three schools listed above in the next calendar year.

Column: Go Home Gary

November 19, 2012

I have just about had it with Gary Bettman and the NHL, specifically Gary Bettman.
As hockey fans are now sitting through the third work stoppage under his regime, it is time to take a long, hard look at what Bettman has done for the NHL and the fans that are finding it increasingly hard to stay interested.
First; Let us look at a few of the good things that Gary has done for the league and more specifically for me, the fan.
1. The Winter Classic.
Old School hockey played on an outdoor rink.
Or as old school as the rules would allow, anyway.
