Lake Region Places Fifth, Falcons Sixth at Invitational

May 15, 2012

NEWPORT–The North Country girls' golf team hosted the 28th Annual North Country Invitational on Monday. It was orginally posted as the 25th, but was actually the 28th.
31 girls competed in the 18 hole tournament with 11 school sending players. On a day that had rain and possible thunderstorms predicted, it turned out to be a fantastic day for golf. Teeing off at noon, the tournament was completed in 4 1/2 hours, a good pace.  Team scores are determined by the best total of two players (details below).

Lake Region Loses Nine Inning Affair to Peoples 7-4

May 13, 2012

ORLEANS–The Lake Region softball team rallied in the first to tie the game, the bottom of the sixth, which eventually forced extra innings, the eighth to push the game to the ninth, but in the bottom of the ninth they could not come up with enough runs to force a tenth as they lost a well played game to the Peoples Academy Wolves on Prom Saturday.
"We kept coming back and coming back. Even though we lost, I think it bodes well for us," coach Matt Tinker said after the game.
The Lady Rangers battled all game long, and it started in the first.

North Country Wins Again, Defeat Highlanders and Tigers

May 13, 2012

NEWPORT/MIDDLEBURY–If you looked at all of the records of the spring teams from North Country, the one that stands out is that of the Falcons boys' tennis crew.
The boys have not lost a match in over a month, currently have a 6-1-1 record and are ranked in the top third of all Division I teams.
"The team likens itself to a junk yard dog," said coach Gary Atchinson. "We have no real big shotmakers. We work our points and I would say we are a real lunch pail, blue collar team."
Starting the weekend at 4-1-1, the boys won back-to-back matches on Friday and Saturday to improve their record.

Eagles Win Battle of the Birds 10-4

May 13, 2012

NEWPORT–Two games in two days can be tough for any athlete, but for a softball pitcher that has to go out and throw back-to-back complete games, it is down right brutal.
That is what Kayla Descheneau had to do this past Thursday and Friday when she took the circle for the Falcons against Colchester and Mount Abe.
With freshman pitcher Taylor Blake unavailable due to a concussion, coach Leslie Dunn had limited options.

Triple Play Highlights North Country- Mount Abe Contest

May 13, 2012

NEWPORT–Triple plays are rare.
I think Taurus at it's full height must triumph over Aries and then trump Gemini, or something to that fact, for it to occur.
Well whether or not the stars were aligned, North Country pulled one off in the sixth inning of their game against Mount Abe on Friday.
Since I was over at the softball game at the time, I will let Nate Stewart, the guy who was in the middle of the action, tell you how it went down.

Wolves Strike Early and Often in 14-3 Win Over the Rangers

May 13, 2012

ORLEANS–It is just a tough time to be a Ranger baseball player.
Lake Region lost their eighth game of the season on Saturday, 14-3 to People Academy, but coach Eric Degree saw some positives on the field from his club.
"My team's play has been a little better than it was earlier this week. They (PA) got a lot of breaks out there today and we did not get any. I got some guys who really starting to come around and we are playing improved defense."

Falcons Shut Out Rangers 7-0 in Girls’ Tennis

May 10, 2012

NEWPORT–Lake Region played host to North Country at the Prouty Beach tennis courts on Wednesday, but the Falcons still felt that home town advantage and defeated the Lady Rangers 7-0.
"We needed this win. We have played some very difficult matches lately, especially ones against Montpelier and Middlebury," said North Country coach Marie George. "The 3-4 loss to Mount Mansfield on Monday really prepared the team for this win."
Unfortunately for Lake Region it was a very one sided affair as the Falcons allowed only two sets to go the Rangers’ way.

BFA Fairfax Takes Both Games Against Lake Region Ball Clubs

May 10, 2012

ORLEANS–Fairfax freshman fireballer Kayla Mathieu stymied Lake Region’s bats, tossing a no-hitter, while her teammates gave her more than enough support in a 20-1 schoolgirls softball game Wednesday night.
“Our first two games against them, they threw (senior pitcher) Ruby (Bushey), and we knew we could hit her,” said Ranger coach Matt Tinker. “We were actually pretty confident coming in. But we weren’t prepared for this girl (Mathieu). She was just phenomenal.”

Number One Doubles the Difference in NCU’s Tennis Loss

May 8, 2012

NEWPORT–North Country came out swinging early, winning three of their first four matches, but Mount Mansfield's Lady Cougars picked up wins in the final three matches to earn the 4-3 victory in girls tennis on Monday.
"This was a very competitive match," said coach Marie George.
Win number one came off the racquets of Micheala Stanley and Doyen Doa as they took the number two doubles match, coming back from a 3-6 loss in the first set to force the tiebreaker and get the "W."
It was their first time playing together and after the first set they settled down and came through for the team.
