U-14 Wildcats Ready for Season Opener

The nets have been strung, lines have been painted and the grass has been mowed in anticipation of the 2012 Derby Wildcat season.
At the helm of one of the girls U-14 teams are Eric and Jenn Daigle and Chris Goulet. They are taking on the job of shaping, mentoring, and improving the skills of 16 young women and tasked with bringing them together to work as a team.

NCU Girls Fall to Montpelier

"Montpelier has a superb team. It is the strongest in our league and the girls are very experienced and powerful players."
That is what coach Marie George had to say after North Country's 6-1 loss to the Solons on Wednesday.
In singles action, Rhiannon Rosamilia (#1) lost to Carly Watson 6-0, 6-0. Kelsey O'Donnell(#2) lost to Annie Jones 6-1, 6-1. India Bluett played (#3) and had the most competitive game losing 6-2, 6-4 against Andria Parento. Their game lasted almost 2 hours. Carlie Diette (#4) lost to Stassy Furber 6-2, 6-0. Annie Arcoleo (#5) lost 6-2, 6-0 to Mary Cain.

FAIRFAX–The Lake Region boys picked up a win while the Lady Rangers fell in Wednesday's make up game against BFA Fairfax.
Behind four innings of work by Kyle Perry and three innings by Logan Harper, the Rangers won a close one 3-2.
"We played some great defense behind our pitching today," said coach Eric Degre.
Cory Whitten had a double in the win.
The softball team did not have as much fun, losing 8-1 against one of the top teams in the Mountain Division.
Four of the eight runs were unearned.
Both teams will head to Stowe on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Raiders.

The Ultimate Option, A New Sport at NCUHS

NEWPORT–Peter Alexander is looking for an alternative to the regular selection of spring sports offered at North Country Union High School.
Since the day he saw a spread about ultimate frisbee in a newspaper roughly a year ago, he has been on a mission to bring the sport up to Falcon Country.
"It was a story about the state championship in St. Johnsbury, hosted by Lyndon. So I buzzed down there after sending an email to the two coaches," he said.
Since viewing the action last May, he has been hooked.

NCU Track Excels at U-32

MONTPELIER–NCU’s trip to U-32 was highlighted by the boys’ first place finish at the event.
Barry Shelton, Riley Simoneau and Jason Webster all threw over 40’ to sweep the shot put.
Simoneau, Shelton, Josh Brien and Webster finished 2 – 5 in the discus.
Colton White, after a two week exchange trip to Germany and a starring role in the IMusical, returned to the team, taking 2nd in the javelin. He hopes to return to the form that qualified him for the New England championships last year.

Tie Breakers the Difference in Falcons’ Loss to BFA

NEWPORT–With the sun shinning down upon them, the North Country girls' tennis team battled for over three hours, but came up just short against BFA St. Albans, losing 5-2.
"It was a long and extremely competitive match," said coach Marie George.

North Country Boys Improve to 2-1 With Win Over BFA

ST. ALBANS–Weather was not a factor for the North Country boys' tennis team as they were indoors at the Collins-Pearly Complex to take on the Bobwhites this past Monday.
The Falcons spotted BFA a 1-0 advantage, forfeiting the number two doubles match, but would allow only one more win the rest of the way as they defeated the Academy 5-2.
Coach Gary Atchinson shook up the lineups, and the new order produced the desired results.
Back at the number one slot, Dave Durivage got off to a slow start, getting down 1-4 to Sam Costes.

BFA Sweeps Falcon Ballclubs in Late Week Action

NEWPORT–It was tough day to be a member of the Falcons on Thursday as both the baseball and softball teams had a rough go of it against BFA St. Albans.
On the softball diamond, the Comets scored one in the first, five in the second and would go on to add thirteen more runs in the final four innings to defeat the Falcons 19-3.
Despite the loss, coach Leslie Dunn was upbeat about the compete level of her team.
"I said to them in the sixth, 'this is going to be our final inning, so let's just go out and get one more run' and they got two, it was just awesome," she said.

Co-ed and Womens’ Champions Crowned in IROC Soccer Leagues

Women’s Soccer-Tuesday Nights
The ladies from Belli Doni Pottery captured another Womens' League crown by defeating arch-rivals Fortin Transportation in the finals by a score of six to three. Belli Doni reached the finals by taking the number two seed overall and upending the women from Muenier Construction in the semi-finals. Fortin Transportation who took the regular season crown for the second straight session with 23 out of a possible 24 points took down upstart Balls-O-Fire in their semi-final match.

Lake Region Golf Places 2nd in Opening Meet

April 29, 2012

MORRISVILLE – The Lake Region Rangers took to the course for their first meet of the season at the Copley Country Club on Thursday afternoon. Matt Morin, last year’s Division 3 State Medalist, looks for another strong run in his senior campaign.
The opening meet of the season didn’t fare well for the Rangers however. Morin shot a 4 over 39 to pace the squad. Carl Oberg shot a 50, while Connor Gaboriault and Holden Poirier each placed with scores of 56.
