Baseball and Softball Falcons Go 1-1 on Road Trip

BURLINGTON, VERGENNES–The North Country baseball and softball teams had identical results this past weekend when they traveled to take on Vergennes and Burlington.
On Thursday both teams defeated BHS. The girls, won their contest 6-4, with Mariah Roberts going 3-4 to lead the offensive attack.
Kelsea Cutting was 2-3 with an RBI and Madison Mosher had a homerun.
Kayla Desheneau went 1-1 on the trip.
The boys won 7-5 behind five and two thirds of pitching from Joel Lamarche.
Trevor Monty, Nate Stewart and Jason Hatin each had two hits.

Lake Region Has Strong Showing in St. Albans

ST. ALBANS–The Lake Region track and field team headed over Franklin County to participate in a BFA hosted meet at the Collins-Pearly Complex.
The Rangers had a strong showing with the girls placing second and the boys taking home third.

Seven Run Sixth Sends Vikes’ Over Falcons 14-8

NEWPORT–The Falcon baseball team had a rough go of it on Saturday morning against Lyndon Institute. After falling behind early, rallying back to take the lead through the middle innings, a tough seven run top of the sixth sealed the boys fate as they lost 14-8 to the Vikings.
"This was a game that wasn't played well," said Coach Brian Bonvechio. "Both teams played like very inexperienced teams and the game was very sloppy as a result."
The Vikings came out ready to play, touching Jon Boyer for three runs in the first inning off of two hits, two walks and an error.

Falcons Show Improvement in Season’s 2nd Game

NEWPORT–North Country's softball team welcomed in Lyndon Institute for their home opener on Saturday morning, but fell short in their effort to pick up their first win, losing to the Vikings 7-3.
While they did not get the win, coach Leslie Dunn was very pleased with the girl's efforts compared to their first time out against St. Johnsbury.
"It was night and day," said Dunn. "Defensively we had some miscues, but we were right on it. We made some really big secondary plays, some real heads up stuff.”
The game kicked off with both teams getting on the scoreboard in the first.

Lady Rangers Drop Two in a Row in Franklin County

RICHFORD–The Richford Rockets plated five runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to secure a come from behind 9-8 victory over the Lake Region Rangers in girls fastpitch action Thursday.
An undermanned Ranger crew struck early with 2 runs in the first, 3 in the second and 3 more in the fourth inning to build an 8-4 lead after four innings of play.

North Country Track and Field Get Off to a Good Start at MMU

JERICHO–The North Country Track and field team traveled to Mount Mansfield Union on Friday for their first meet of the season and came home with positive results.
The girls’ squad took second place on the day earning 118 points, and the boys were in third with a score of 103.
"It was a good first meet for us. The freshman got to get their feet wet while the veterans were able to see some competition instead of just practicing," said coach Lonnie Wade.

North Country Softball Taking it ‘One Day at a Time’ in 2012

NEWPORT–The 2012 North Country softball team is a mixture of veterans and new faces with the numbers skewing towards the new faces.
"There are some vets, an awful lot of rookies, but it is early and we are looking to get some things together," said head coach Leslie Dunn.
Returning this year are seniors Hillary Manning, Samantha Collins, Brandi Thornton, Anna Ghelli, Emily Corkins and Kayla Desheneau as well as juniors Mariah Roberts and Anna Bingham.
Pitching is one area where the Falcons have some depth, and Dunn is excited to have reliable arms ready to go.

U-32 Hand Falcon Boys First Loss of the Season

NEWPORT–In their first match since completing their inter-squad playdowns, North Country's boys' tennis team unveiled a new look line-up that had Travers Parsons-Grayson in the one spot, Dave Durivage in the two, Zach Tweed at three, Maoz Knight fourth and Thomas Durivage playing in the number five singles position.
Fred Petzold and Steve Raboin played number one doubles with newcomers Kody Halikas and Peter Steuwe making their debut at the number two.

North Country Baseball and Softball Fall to St. Johnsbury Hilltoppers in Season Opening Contests

ST. JOHNSBURY–The North Country baseball team fell 7-2 to St.Johnsbury in their first game of the season on Tuesday.
After three scoreless innings, St.Johnsbury got to Falcons starting pitcher Joel Lemarche in the fourth, putting up six runs in the inning.
The Hilltoppers added a run in the fifth, making it 7-0 before the Falcons were able to break up the Academy's Lincoln Lemieux's bid for a no hitter.
After Trevor Monty made it first on a strikeout error by the St. J catcher, Nate Stewart singled, followed by Jon Boyer's infield single.
