Falcons Fall 47-43 in OT as Essex Plays Spoiler on Senior Night

NEWPORT–So close.
Tied at 40 with no time on the clock and three shots to earn the win, the basketball Gods frowned down upon the Falcons as Emma Joslin was unable to find the bottom of the net, and North Country went on to lose the game 47-43 in overtime.
Now before anyone jumps on Joslin, remember this, it was her hard work and effort that got the Falcons in the position to win the game in the first place, but we will get to that later.

Falcon Girls Lose 4-2 to Rutland in Play-off Opener

JAY–A very promising season came to unexpected halt on Thursday evening when the Rutland Red Raiders defeated the North Country girls hockey team 4-2.
"We were definitely rusty," said coach Claude Paul, "We hadn't played in two weeks, and it was one of those games where you said it was going to take us a while to get going, but it really never got going."
The Raiders, however got going early, as Erin Reilly tipped home a weak point shot just twenty-six seconds into the game.

Chargers Lose in Quarters to Rockets

SOUTH ROYALTON – Craftsbury Academy headed south to take on #4 Rochester Friday evening. Both clubs tied with identical 16-4 records, but the Chargers lost out on the chance for the high seed and the home game because of a loss they suffered last Saturday in a head-to-head matchup between the two clubs.
The Rockets were in command from tip-off dominating every facet of the game to book a trip to the Barre Aud with a convincing 84-58 victory.
Vermont’s personal highlight reel, Pavin Parrish, led all scorers with 35 points, including a perfect 15-15 from the free throw stripe.

Falcon Boys Bow Out of Play-offs, Lose 76-38 to MMU

JERICHO–The North Country boys basketball team's season came to an end on Wednesday night with a 76-38 loss to the top seeded Mount Mansfield Cougars.
North Country had a tough time competing with the larger Cougar squad, and while it was close early, MMU was able to power past the Falcons, en-route to the win.
“The score was 10-6 and Caleb had back-to-back drives, but they didn’t go in, and they (MMU) came right back and took what could have been a tie score and made it 15-6,”said Coach Brian Bonvechio.

Falcons Win 4-2, Advance to Quarterfinals vs SBUHS

JAY–North Country's boys hockey team came out on Wednesday night and played a hard-nosed, well disciplined game to earn a 4-2 win over Spaulding in the opening round of the Metro Division play-offs.
Said Assistant Captain Nate Stewart on the win, "This is amazing, I can't really explain it anymore than we are ecstatic."
Coach Andrew Roy shuffled his lines, and the combinations produced a well balanced attack for the Falcons.

Rangers Fall 62-55 in First Round to Solons

MONTPELIER – The Lake Region Rangers took to the road Wednesday night for the first round of the Division 2 playoffs against the #7 seeded Montpelier Solons. The Rangers were without sophomore Alex Beauregard for the contest who suffered a high ankle sprain during the closing moments of the last game against Richford. After a contest that went down to the wire, the blue and white ultimately fell 62-55.

Craftsbury Moves on With 45-40 Win Over Chelsea Red Devils

HARDWICK–It took until the later stages of the game, but Craftsbury was able to put together a 16-3 run to get past the Chelsea Red Devils to advance in the Division four play-offs.
The win earns the team a date with Rochester, who was one of four teams to defeat the Chargers this season.
Kyle Adams had seventeen points in the win, and freshman Alex Vetere had eleven.
Their game against number four Rochester is slated to take place on Friday at the South Royalton high school at 7:00.

Rangers, Crusaders Win, Falcons Fall in Girls Basketball Action

BHS Defeats NCU 46-36
BURLINGTON–A twenty-one point second quarter sealed the win for the Burlington Seahorses as they edged out North Country 46-36 in girls basketball action Tuesday night.
It was 11-11 after the first, then came the disastrous second.
The girls rebounded in the second half, out scoring Burlington in both the third and the fourth, but the hole was just too big to climb out of.
Noelle Pinard continued her strong play, scoring twenty points and grabbing five boards.
"You can't say enough good things about her," said coach Brown, "She is just a pleasure to watch."

Goaltending Key to Falcon Play-off Success

NEWPORT–The North Country girls hockey team get their post-season underway tonight when they host Rutland at the Jay Peak Ice Haus at 6:00.
It has been a fantastic year for the Falcons. They have more than doubled their previous season's win total, and made the jump from the bottom of the barrel to being one of the top teams in the Lake Division.
13-6 North Country faced off against the 10-7 Red Raiders just once this season, a 5-3 loss in Rutland.

Boys Play-off Action Gets Underway Wednesday Night

NEWPORT–It is play-off time in the wonderful world of winter sports, and three of the four area high schools (UCA will not make a stab at the Division 4 basketball post-season this year) will get the second season underway today.
First up is the North Country boys basketball team.
The Falcons finished the year at 6-14, and their record earned them a date with top seeded Mount Mansfield Cougars in Jericho.
The Cougars were an impressive 19-1 in Division one action, and they provide a strong challenge for the Falcons.
