NEK Blue Devils Take Vermont Sting IceBreaker Tournament

BARRE/MONTPELIER–The 7/8 grade NEK Blue Devils took part in the 5th annual Vermont Sting IceBreaker this past weekend, and came home with a perfect 4-0 record, claiming the 8th grade division title.
In the opening game, the Blue Devils battled back against the Littleton Crusaders to force overtime on an Austin Roberge 3 with 2 seconds on the clock. Noah Racine’s 3 to start OT gave the blue and white the lead that they never looked back from, winning 62-58. Roberge led the way with 34 points and Danny Epinette chipped in with 17 points and 13 boards.

Cota, U-16 Shamrocks Heading to Dallas for Nationals

NEWPORT – The Vermont Shamrocks U-16 girls hockey team took second place at the Tier II New England Hockey championships this past weekend, earning the squad a chance to compete for the national title in Dallas next week. Usually only one team is sent from the region, but many at USA Hockey believed that they were leaving out one of the best teams in the country and are allowing the Shamrocks to compete for the title.

Pythons Continue Their Winning Ways in Milton

The NEK Python wrestling team spent their St. Patrick’s Day in Milton, and although they did not don any green, they certainly found some gold as three of their wrestlers brought home first place medals.
Josh Roberts, Logan Gerrow, and first year wrestler Tyler Wilson all took home the gold with their performances on Saturday.
As for the rest of the Pythons, the brother act of Aiden and Malakai Maher came away with second place honors.

Dunlavey Students Bring Their Best to Governor’s Cup

Eleven students from the Newport branch of Dunlavey’s Black Belt Academy recently competed at the Governor's Cup Tournament held March 10, 2012 in Milton. The students competed in patterns, board breaking, and sparring. Jonah Wheeler, age 11, was the Under 16 Red/Black Belt Grand Champion.
Dunlavey’s Black Belt Academy has locations in both Newport and Morrisville. The Newport Academy is in the same building as Awsom Gymnastics. Classes are offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons and evenings for all age levels from 4 to adult.

Blue Wave Youngsters Find Success in Milton

Six Deslandes Blue Wave Tae Kwon Do students attended a tournament held on March 10th in Milton. The group pictured were at their very first competition, and they ranged in age from 5 to 6 years old. There was a great turn out for the tournament, with every age being represented. The students competed in forms, breaking, and sparring, and walked away winners while displaying great sportsmanship. Deslandes strives to teach their students to compete with respect, and most of all, have a great time!

Pythons Compete Hard at New England Championships

Five members of the NEK Pythons went to the New England Youth Wrestling Championship at the Nashua high school in Nashua, NH this past Saturday.
Codey Lamere had the best day out of the five, finishing second in the 89 lbs. weight class.
Jacob Sylvester also had a nice afternoon, placing third in the 84 lbs. weight division.
Josh Roberts, Logan Gerrow, and Logan Sylvester all wrestled well in their two matches, but were all eliminated in the third round.
While these five were over in the Granite State, the rest of the team went to Mount Mansfield Tournament in Jericho.

Falcon Snowboarders Finish Season With States at Okemo

OKEMO–The North Country Snowboard teams' wrapped up their season with the state meet at Okemo Mountain on Friday.
The boys took home fifth place, combining a 61 in Giant Slalom, 54 on the Half-pipe, and a Slope Style score of 76 for a total of 191 points.
Josh Brien's twenty-second place finish was the high-water mark for the Falcons in the slope competition. Justin Christopher was thirty-second, Nick Kincaid thirty-eighth, Mike LeMay forty-sixth, and Chuck Norton fifty-fifth.

Rangers’ Denied Last Second Miracle, Fall to Hartford 43-41

HARTFORD – 2 points is all that separated Lake Region from their 6th consecutive trip to the Barre Aud for the Final Four. With the Hartford Hurricanes on top 43-41 and under 10 seconds on the clock, Drew Neal’s 3-ball wouldn’t fall, sending the Hurricanes to the semi-finals.

Bobwhites Edge Out Falcons 3-2 in Double Overtime

ST. ALBANS–A magical run by the North Country boys hockey team came to an end in dramatic fashion Wednesday as they boys fell to the BFA Bobwhites 3-2 in double overtime.
"They gave everything they had," coach Andrew Roy said after the game, "They did not back down when they were down going into the third period, and we never gave up. It was an unfortunate bounce at the end, but that is the game we play."

Falcons’ Season Ends With 70-34 to Rice

SOUTH BURLINGTON–The North Country girls basketball team's season came to a close on Wednesday night when they fell to the Rice Green Knights 70-34 in the opening round of the Division One play-offs.
"We fought until the end, and it was very emotional," said coach Christiane Brown.
The Falcons played a strong first quarter, keeping the Rice scorers at bay, and after one it was 12-8 Knights.
Said Brown, "It was a great first quarter. We did not let their top guard Hailee Baron to get the ball, as Anna held her to just one point in the entire game."
