Lake Region Tennis Set for 2012 Campaign

ORLEANS— “Senior leadership and senior contribution,” are what coach Laura Laramee says will be the key to Lake Region’s run during the 2012 Tennis season. “We are a very senior heavy team and I am looking for those girls to carry the load,” she would go on to add.
While tennis may not be as popular as the Big 3 of Soccer, Basketball, and Baseball, the blue and white still have 12 girls willing to test their skill on the blacktop.

Young Falcons Confident About the 2012 Campaign

NEWPORT–Four.
That's all folks, just four core players from the 2011 North Country Varsity baseball team are returning in 2012.
The Falcons lost a whopping eighty-three percent of their roster to graduation. The veteran four, the only members of the this year’s with significant time at the varsity level are the two seniors, Nate Stewart and Jon Boyer, and two juniors, Mike McCarthy and Jason Hatin. these guys will be expected to provide the team with leadership.

North Country Girls Tennis Looks to be Competitive in 2012

JERICHO/NEWPORT–The 2012 North Country girls tennis team got their season underway last week against Mount Mansfield.
While it was partly sunny with seasonable temperatures here in Newport, it was miserable in Jericho.
From the moment the team arrived at the courts rain poured down upon the players, forcing them to deal with the miserable conditions until the matches were eventually suspended.

Lady Ranges Fall 8-3 to BFA Fairfax in Season Opener

FAIRFAX–The Lake Region Lady Rangers opened their 2012 softball season much like they did in 2011. With snow still twirling around the air and temperatures straddling the 40-degree mark, the Rangers could not overcome first-game jitters, falling to perennial powerhouse Fairfax, 8-3.
Fairfax got things rolling in the first inning, pushing across four runs (three of which were unearned), as Lake Region generously assisted their hosts with four errors.

Lake Region’s Track and Field Kicks off New Season

ORLEANS – “The goal for the season is to compete, be productive and have an athlete compete in every event.” Those were the words of Coach Auclair during a preseason workout.
This season’s squad will be larger than usual, with 20 girls and 16 boys making up the 36 member team. 10 freshmen have also made the jump to the track and field team.

Olympic Hockey Champs Tuning up for World Championships

JAY PEAK - Team Canada woman’s coach Dan Church is in his first year as head man of the national team. He has been around the block in terms of hockey experience however and knows the pressure that is on his team.
”We tell our team that pressure is a privilege," he said. "When you represent Canada, you are expected to play well. That pressure is a good thing. I don’t know if I agree that we are the favorite since we have had trouble winning the World’s lately. But we expect to play well each time out.”
The rivalry with the USA has made both teams better.

Falcons Win Season Opener Against Mount Mansfield

NEWPORT–A cold day with a mix of sun and clouds greeted the North Country boys tennis team as they kicked off their season against Mount Mansfield Wednesday afternoon.
With the Falcons and Cougars splitting the six matches, it came down to total games won, and with a 61-57 advantage, North Country picked up the win.
Dave Durivage dropped the first set 2-6, but rallied to take the next two 6-1, 7-5, defeating Dave Poleson in the number one slot.
"Dave's match was all about ebb and flow," said coach Gary Atchinson. "He fought his way through it and toughed it out in the end."

Team Sweden Eyes Medal Round

JAY PEAK - With the Ice Hockey Women's World Championship just a couple days away, Sweden’s women’s hockey team is working hard. The team, housed at Jay Peak’s golf course condos, is getting prepared for the eight-team tournament that starts Saturday at UVM’s Gutterson field House. The tourney will feature the best eight women’s hockey teams on the planet.
For Team Sweden, it’s another chance to keep building a program that has become a contender for the medal rounds over the last few years. The team is generally acknowledged as a top five club on the world ratings chart.

Lady Rangers Expect to Keep Playing at a High Level

ORLEANS–Coming off of a season where they reached the quarter-finals, the Lake Region softball team is looking to maintain that same level of play in 2012.
"We have set the bar pretty high over the last three years, and the group we have coming back this year is a veteran group, so they know what is expected," said head coach Matt Tinker.
Depth has been an asset for the Rangers in recent seasons, and they will have to utilize that depth again this year to fill some holes in the line-up.
Lake Region lost four players to graduation last year, all four being major contributors to the team.

Balanced Falcon Boys Ready for 2012 Tennis Campaign.

NEWPORT–With the season getting underway this afternoon, the North Country boys tennis team is ripe with promise.
"We've got a good blend of upper and underclassman this year," said head coach Gary Atchinson.
Said senior Maoz Knight, "It looks good. A lot of the guys have gotten better, and we have all improved. I think we should be pretty good."
The team finished 4-9 and missed the tourney last season, but with a very balanced team in 2012, Atchinson is feeling good about this year's chances.
