Orleans Country Club Championship Weekend Results

August 18, 2011

Greg Bean and Jane Horton hold the club champion honors for Orleans Country Club after a two day medal stroke play event. Greg Bean scored a 76-72 for 148. Jane Horton scored 84-83 for 167. Bob Horton took the President's Cup honors with a low net score of 62 on Sunday. Mark Fauteux took the Junior Club Championship with 98-92 for 190.

194 Race in Kingdom Run

A record 194 runners & walkers gathered at Irasburg Common on Saturday morning, August 13, to participate in the 5th annual Kingdom Run. Three course records were broken as athletes from France, Canada, Vermont, and ten other states displayed their athletic talents in this competetive, but friendly sports event. Laurel Cole from Jericho, VT smashed the Women’s 5K-Run with a time of 20:10. Geordie Heller of Putney, VT sailed by the finish line with a new course record in the Men’s 5K-Walk with a time of 35:35.

NC Heat to Host Weekend Tournament

The North Country Heat U14 baseball team will be playing host to six teams in a round robin style baseball tournament this weekend. Games will be played Friday through Sunday at both Gardner Park and North Country Union High School.
The tournament will feature two local teams, the OEC Lightning and the host team the NC Heat, as well as an all-star team from St. Johnsbury, and teams from Granby, Que, Dover, NH, and Middlebury.
There will also be a home run derby on Saturday evening at 5:00.

Celtics’ Twiss to Speak at 4th Annual Orleans/Northern Essex HOF Dinner

Jeff Twiss, Vice President of Media Service and Alumni Relations for the Boston Celtics, will be the guest speaker at this year’s Orleans/Northern Essex County Athletic Hall of Fame dinner on August 27th. Twiss’ father Bob, an inductee of the Hall two years ago, resides in the area and helped secure his son’s services for the event.
Jeff graduated from UVM in 1977, and prior to his time with the Celtics was a teacher and three sport coach at Randolph High School.

NC Pink and Colombia Forrest to Square off in Championship Game

DERBY–The Women’s Soccer League semi-finals were held at the North Country Junior High School on Wednesday night. The twin billing featured number three Colombia Forrest taking on number two Spates and number four Fortin Transportation squaring off against top ranked NC Pink a.k.a. what seems to bare a striking resemblance to the projected 2011 North Country girls high school soccer team.

Orleans Country Club Hosts Ladies Summer Medley

Shooting a score of 76 were the teams of Marcy Mastin and Kim Haley of Orleans Country Club and Barb Shiffler and Carla Desnoyers of Williston and Champlain. Horace Archer, PGA pro on Thursday, July 21st at Orleans Country Club, declared the two teams co-winners of the tournament. The event was the Ladies Invitational Summer Medley, which attracted golfers from this area and other parts of Vermont. The format consisted of six holes each of Best Ball, Scramble, and Scotch Ball. Net winners were Irene Farrar and Judy Martel of Orleans coming in with a 60.

Lake Region Takes Home Babe Ruth Championship

NEWPORT–The Junior Babe Ruth Championship of Orleans County was on the line Tuesday night as the North Country Athletics squared off against Lake Region at North Country Union High School.
On a warm and dusty field, Lake Region was able to overcome a two run deficit in the final inning of the contest to get the 7-5 come from behind win.
"I was a little nervous with my guys to be honest with you, but those guys, I was very proud of them, they worked hard till the end and never gave up," said LR Coach Matt Ladd on his team's 7th inning performance.

Cutting, Baker Win Horseshoe Championship

WESTMORE–The Orleans Lions held their annual Horseshoe World Championships this past Saturday.
With sunny skies and temperatures hovering near ninety degrees, the event drew over 300 spectators throughout the day, and featured 80 participants battling for the chance to be labeled the World Champion.
Steve Cutting and Ben Baker were the best of the best at the competition and they took home the first place trophy.
“I just go out there to have fun,” said Baker, “I don’t expect to win, but it is nice when it happens.”

Prouty Beach 2's Advance

NEWPORT–In a match they had to win, the Prouty Beach 2’s of the USTA 4.0 Senior Women’s League came through with a 2-1 win over the White River Junction Volley Dolls on Sunday afternoon.
“Well, we did it. We finished with an 8-2 record and have qualified to go to Sectionals in South Hadley, Massachusetts,” said Co-Captain Petey Johnson.
Johnson, along with her doubles partner Ann O’Brien were up 5-4 in their first set when one of the Volley Dolls succumbed to heat sickness and was forced to withdraw from the match giving the 2’s a 1-0 lead.

$1,500 Raised for Former King Lamothe

July 18, 2011

NEWPORT–The OEC Kings held a fundraiser for former King Buddy Lamothe on Saturday at Gardner Park during their doubleheader against the Vermont Jays. The team, with help from members of the Orleans, Essex, and Caledonia County communities, were able to raise close to fifteen-hundred dollars to help aid Lamothe with the cost of his medical bills.
“It was great to see so many former teammates and families come out and help lend a hand,” said OEC Coach Brian Bonvechio.
