Cutting, Baker Win Horseshoe Championship

WESTMORE–The Orleans Lions held their annual Horseshoe World Championships this past Saturday.
With sunny skies and temperatures hovering near ninety degrees, the event drew over 300 spectators throughout the day, and featured 80 participants battling for the chance to be labeled the World Champion.
Steve Cutting and Ben Baker were the best of the best at the competition and they took home the first place trophy.
“I just go out there to have fun,” said Baker, “I don’t expect to win, but it is nice when it happens.”

Prouty Beach 2's Advance

NEWPORT–In a match they had to win, the Prouty Beach 2’s of the USTA 4.0 Senior Women’s League came through with a 2-1 win over the White River Junction Volley Dolls on Sunday afternoon.
“Well, we did it. We finished with an 8-2 record and have qualified to go to Sectionals in South Hadley, Massachusetts,” said Co-Captain Petey Johnson.
Johnson, along with her doubles partner Ann O’Brien were up 5-4 in their first set when one of the Volley Dolls succumbed to heat sickness and was forced to withdraw from the match giving the 2’s a 1-0 lead.

$1,500 Raised for Former King Lamothe

NEWPORT–The OEC Kings held a fundraiser for former King Buddy Lamothe on Saturday at Gardner Park during their doubleheader against the Vermont Jays. The team, with help from members of the Orleans, Essex, and Caledonia County communities, were able to raise close to fifteen-hundred dollars to help aid Lamothe with the cost of his medical bills.
“It was great to see so many former teammates and families come out and help lend a hand,” said OEC Coach Brian Bonvechio.

Jenne Selected for Twin State Game

Former North Country soccer standout Ashley Jenne was named to Vermont’s team for next weekend’s Lions Twin State Soccer Match. The game, which has been a tradition since 1975,(1983 for the girls) helps raise funds for the Austine Greene Mountain Lions Camp, a camp for the hearing impaired, in Vermont and a variety of different projects in New Hampshire.
Jenne is the lone representative from the Orleans County, although other players, including Emily Pecue from NCUHS and Danika Gallup and Paige Wells from Lake Region, were also invited to try-out for the team.

Prue Places 5th in Bodybuilding Debut

After 3 years of working out and training at Kingdom Racquet & Fitness Club in Newport, VT, 23 year old Andrew Prue was convinced by owner Dave Gauvin to see how his hard work in the gym compares to others in the sport of bodybuilding.
After finding a competition with a debut class, Prue submitted the fees to the Organization of Competitive Bodybuilders and decided to compete in Amherst, Massachusetts at the OCB Bay State Never Surrender, a natural bodybuilding competition.

Lake Region U16 Walks Off With the Win

ORLEANS- Bottom of the last inning. Two outs. Bases loaded. Tie game. And the batter comes through with a game winning hit, much to the delight of the hometown crowd and teammates on the bench.
Virtually every kid has dreamed of this scenario playing whiffle ball in their backyard at some point or another, and on Monday night at Lake Region the Ranger’s Haley Kennedy was livin’ the dream. Kennedy’s high chop infield hit scored Chelsea Poginy from third base, giving the Rangers a thrilling 7-6 come from behind victory over the Lyndon A’s.

U16 Rangers Sweep St. Johnsbury

ST. JOHNSBURY- Down by five runs entering the final inning, and weary from over four hours of play, the Lake Region Rangers Babe Ruth softball team rallied for seven runs to take a 17-15 decision over the St. Johnsbury Dodgers at Leonard’s Field in St. J. Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers-Dodgers match-up was the second of a two-team doubleheader for the Rangers, who squeaked by the St. Johnsbury Red Sox 9-8 earlier in the day.

New Dugouts for NCHUS Soccer

If you have driven by the NCUHS Varsity soccer field recently, you may have seen the new soccer dug-outs! The previous shelters had served their purpose well, and after almost 20 years the time had come to replace them. Rather than spend money on dug-outs of the same collapsible design, the decision was made to put the same money into permanent sheds. Gone are the days are setting up and breaking down the old structures, while the safety component of not having to move the solid but very heavy roof, will be well appreciated.

U16 Rangers Dominate Opposition

BARRE–The Lake Region Rangers girls Babe Ruth softball squad improved their summer record to 3-0 Wednesday, with a drizzly 12-6 victory over Barre.
Played in a constant mild rain, the Rangers jumped out to an early 8-3 lead. They would maintain that lead before the game was eventually called due to field conditions after five innings of play.
Hannah Leroux, Michelle Thibeault, and Whitney Poginy had two hits apiece for LR, while Alyssa Royer swiped a pair of bases and scored three times.
Thibeault picked up the win on the bump, allowing just three hits while striking out five.

Six Rangers Grab Mountain League Honors

June 26, 2011

The Lake Region Softball team was honored with three selections to the Mountain League’s first team, two selections to the second team, and one for the honorable mention team.
Junior Callie-Rae Cashin and seniors Paige Wells, and Danika Gallup were selected to the first team. Cashin in the outfield, Wells as a 2nd baseman, and Gallup at the designated hitter position.
Freshman catcher Corrina Cota and sophomore outfielder Whitney Poginy made it on the second team, while junior short-stop Emily Comins received an honorable mention.
