Gallup Wins Sportsmanship Award

BOSTON–Danika Gallup , a senior at Lake Region Union High School, has just been awarded $5,000 as part of the Hood Good Sport Scholarship Program. For the second year in a row, HP Hood has awarded $5,000 scholarships to varsity athletes who demonstrate good sportsmanship on and off the field, as well as excel in academics and is an involved community member.
Out of the over 2,400 submissions received, 3 winners were selected out of 10 finalists in each New England state. Gallup was 1 out of 3 chosen for the scholarship in Vermont. She will be attending Saint Michael's College in the fall.

Falcon Girls Wrap up Season

ST.ALBANS–Strong and gusty northwest winds, fifty degree temperatures, and light showers, perfect weather for the final girl’s golf match of the season. This was a make-up, weather postponed the first date. Weather worse than this?
26 girls from 8 high schools braved the conditions to compete in the Champlain Invitational, including a record 9 golfers from South Burlington. Essex won the event with a score of 98. BFA edged Burlington115 to 117 for second. MVU finished fifth with a 125, followed by North Country.

Fine Finish for Falcons at States

BURLINGTON–With a team score of 61, The North Country boys track and Field team took home fourth place overall at the Division One State Track and Field meet on Saturday.
"It went down to the wire for third place between us and Colchester," Coach Gary Johnson said.
The team was paced to victory by the efforts of it's short distance runners, specifically Dylan Colombia. Colombia had two second place finishes, the first in the 100M with a time of 11.38, the second in the 200M, coming in in 23.42.

Rangers Fall to Leland and Gray 3-2 in Semi's

TOWNSEND-The Leland and Gray Rebels moved past the Lake Region girls in the semi-finals by the slimmest of margins, a 3-2 win in Townsend. Lake Region out hit Leland and Gray 7-4 but an early passed ball with no cover at home, single tallies from a three walk inning, and the only extra base hit recorded by the Rebels, gave the home team a 3-0 lead. Lake Region prevented further damage when left fielder Callie-Rae Cashin pulled in a fly ball and picked off a Leland and Gray runner as she scrambled back to second.

Middlebury Tops Falcons 6-1

NEWPORT–Deanna Brandstetter had to battle hard for her 7-5, 7-5 victory over Middlebury's Jane McCabe on Wednesday.
Brandstetter had the was the only member of the Falcons to pick up a win in the match for 6-6 North Country.
Middlebury was dominant in all the other matches, and the only other Falcons to win a set was the doubles team of Rosie Wheeler and Briana Treadwell who won their first set 6-3.

Solons Defeat Falcons 6-1

NEWPORT–Martha Petzoldt was the lone Falcon to pick up a win on Tuesday as the North Country girls tennis team fell to Montpelier 6-1.
Petzoldt had been struggling a bit, but Coach Marie George was pleased with the way she battled against the Solons.
"She really came back, she hadn't played well, but (against Montpelier) it was like the old Martha was back."
George said her captain was able to make adjustments in her game that forced her opponent to play to her strengths.

Falcons Battle Hard in 6-4 Defeat

NEWPORT–"I have been around high school baseball for a long time, and I haven't seen many better games than this."
Those were the first words from Coach Bonvechio after North Country's tough 6-4 loss to Missisquoi on Wednesday.
"It was well played, not many errors, some exciting plays, well hit balls, good pitching from both teams, it was a fun game to be part of, I'm just sorry we ended up on the losing end."

MVU Pitching Freezes Falcons Bats.

NEWPORT–North Country ran into a tough pitching Missisquoi Valley Union Thunderbirds team on Tuesday, as Dakota Raleigh threw seven strong innings in the T-Birds 8-0 win over the Falcons.
"They pitched a lot in to us, and some of them (NCU) couldn't make the adjustment," said Coach Dunn.
The Falcons were in striking distance most of the game, but a five run top of the seventh made it a much tougher mountain to climb.
Kayla Desheneau went the distance for the Falcons, and Mariah Roberts and Anna Bingham had the lone hits for North Country.

Rangers Win Wild Won 18-12 in Ten

HARDWICK-It took ten innings but the Lake Region boys finally finished off the Hazen Wildcats by a wide open 18-12 score. Deadlocked at ten, the Rangers exploded for eight runs in the top of the frame.

Ranger Offense Continues to Roll

HARDWICK–One day after scoring 14 runs against Oxbow, the Lake Region Lady Ranger’s continued their offensive outburst by scoring 14 runs against the Hazen Wildcats.
With the playoffs looming, Coach Matt Tinker’s Lady Rangers know they need to be firing on all cylinders if they want to make a deep run in the Division 3 Playoffs. On Tuesday afternoon they pounded out 14 runs off of 10 hits, and stole an astounding 18 bases.
