2014 Northeast Kingdom Junior Golf Tour is Underway

ORLEANS–The 3rd Annual Northeast Kingdom Junior Golf Tour swung into action on Thursday afternoon at the Orleans Country Club.
For the second year in a row, the day began with a one hour clinic that had OCC Club Pro Josh Olney and Newport Country Club Pro Kin O'Neil giving the kids instruction and helpful points on improving their golf technique.

Triple Threat Camp, Teaching More Than Just Basketball

NEWPORT-Basketball camp on a warm July week has become a tradition in the town of Newport.
What started out as the Lake Mephremaggog Basketball Camp forty-four years has ago has evolved into the Vermont Triple Threat Basketball Camp, and under the direction of of John Gunn, the program is as strong as ever.
Gunn, who started with program as a coach in the 1990's and has since moved on to be a director in the new millennium, explained the camp's mission when it comes to teaching the game of basketball.

OEC Lightning Take Game Two Against Montreal Rockies

NEWPORT–The OEC Lightning Junior Legion baseball team squared off against the Montreal Rockies in a non-league doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at North Country Union High School.
After dropping the first contest 11-7, the Lightning's bats came alive in game two, as they went on to earn the split, defeating the older Rockies 15-11.

Jankowski, Giroux, Goulet and Smith Take Gross at VT PGA Event

WILLISTON–Former Jay Peak Club Pro and Current Stowe Mountain Club Assistant Pro Dave Jankowski teamed up with a trio of North Country high school golfers, Alex Giroux, Katie Goulet and Tyler Smith, to play at the Vermont PGA Pro-Junior Champions event at the Williston Country Club on June 30th.
The end result was an extremely satisfying one for the quartet, as they shot a 137, edging out teams from Vermont National and Country Club of Barre by one stroke to take home the Gross title.

Lake Region Wins 12-U Cal Ripken Baseball Districts

BARTON-Three runs scored in the third inning was all of the offense the 12-U Cal Ripken District Championship baseball game would see, as Lake Region defeated their neighbors to the north, North Country, 3-0 to pick up the win and take home the hardware.
"I thought it was a really good effort and our pitching was outstanding," said LR coach Rick Hudson.
Said NC coach Mike LaCourse, "I thought it was a huge improvement from the last time we played them. Our boys really came around and started battling hard, but we just ran out of time."

Local Hockey Players Shine in Make-A-Wish Games

BURLINGTON–The official conclusion to the 2013-2014 Vermont high school hockey season came on Saturday evening at the Make-A-Wish All-Star Game between the top seniors from Vermont and New Hampshire at UVM's historic Gutterson Field House.
The two games featured a total of five players from Orleans County.
Corrina Cota and Meghan Martin skated in the girl's game, and the trio of Ross DeLaBruere, Nate Marsh and Ryan Paul in the boy's.
It turned out to be a wonderful showing for our area athletes, as they tallied three goals and four assists between the five of them.

Goulet Earns Top 20 Finish at New England Tournament

North Country golfer Katie Goulet competed in the New England Girls Golf Championship at the Bretwood Golf Course in Keene NH on Monday. She scored an 84 for the day, going 39 and 45. She reported she had a number of birdie opportunities, but had to settle for pars. The second nine provided her with more sand shots than she wanted. Over 60 girls representing six New England states competed for the title, which was won with a score of 72. Katie’s score placed her in the top 20 players. Katie has had a great freshman year and looks forward to next season.

Newport City Wins 12-U Babe Ruth Softball Championship

June 24, 2014

NEWPORT–Newport City and Derby squared off on Monday night for the Babe Ruth 12-U Softball League Championship in Gardner Park, and with a 5-run outpouring in the bottom of the 6th inning, Newport City was able to wake away with a 7-3 win and the championship trophy.
"The girls take three to four innings to get going, it has been an on-going thing all year, but they usually come out late in the game to prevail," said NC coach Eric Cotnoir.

OEC Kings Split in Season Opening Doubleheader

June 17, 2014

MONTPELIER VT-- The OEC Kings won game one of their double header at Montpelier High School against Post #3 by a score of 12-0 in five innings.
Danville's Brett Elliott picked up the win, going four innings and allowing three hits. Saint Johnsbury's Chris Connolly pitched a scoreless fifth inning to close things out.
On offense for the Kings, Lyndon's Davis Guyer went 2 for 3 with a double and triple while driving in four runs. North Country's Wyatt Prue doubled, drove in two runs, and scored three times.

Ryan Paul Set to Play for Junior Bruins Organization

NEWPORT–With North Country's graduation having come and gone, many students will head off to college or to work when the next school year rolls around.
However, Ryan Paul will be taking a different path, much like his teammate Ross DeLaBruere, he will be heading off to play junior hockey.
Paul was signed this spring by the Boston Junior Bruins of the USPHL.
"It feels great," said Paul on the signing. "People have been telling me for years that I could, and to just be able to play at the next level and live the dream is amazing."
