Another petition circulating to stop Derby Line Wind Project
DERBY LINE – An online petition is circulating geared to show the scale of opposition to the Derby Line Wind project. More than three hundred people have already signed the petition, according to the site change.org.The petition was created by “Citoyens de Stanstead,” and is called “Stop the Derby Line Wind Project.”Many Stanstead residents are in an uproar over the proposal to build two 420-foot plus turbines in Derby Line near the US-Canadian border. Opponents say the turbines are too close to homes and too tall. Many worry about potential side-effects. Some homes in Canada would be located approximately 1,000 feet from one of the turbines.“This is about green, but not green energy. This is about money, that color green, the greenback,” it states on the petition web site.Main concerns listed are ice throw and safety, noise, shadow flicker, and decline in property value. The Town of Stanstead has intervenor status and is opposed to the project. The Village of Derby Line is also opposed, although the chair of the board of trustees Keith Beadle supports the project. The Town of Derby has yet to take an official stand. A vote on the project last Monday at the Derby Select Board’s regular meeting was divided.Stanstead is taking action and determined to be heard. When the developer, Encore Redevelopment of Burlington, sent out official notification to adjoining landowners and neighboring towns, Stanstead was not included.Encore was required by the Public Service Board to notify Stanstead. After the notification, Stanstead residents began to take action to oppose the project due to its proximity to homes.A letter is available at the petition website that is directed to the PSB and to Chad Farrell of Encore Redevelopment. It says that the petition calls Encore Redevelopment and the PSB to immediately stop the Derby Line wind project because it could be harmful to health, the economy, and the nature and safety of the residents and region of Stanstead. “Therefore I ask you to stop the planning and building of wind turbines in Derby Line close to Canadian residential environments right now.”This is not the first petition against the project. Soon after Encore announced its plans last summer, a petition opposing the project began circulating around Derby and the Village of Derby Line.Despite outspoken opponents, the developer and Bryan Davis of Grandview Farm, who wants to host one of the turbines, maintain that there is also wide-spread support for the project. The Town of Derby has not held a vote. Select board member Steve Gendreau made a motion Monday to hold a public vote but the motion died without finding a second. Who would pay for the vote was brought up.
