NEWPORT CITY — Fire didn't knock Little Gnesta Bed and Breakfast out of business.
Firefighters responded to the business on Prospect Street at 4 p.m., Sunday, for a report of a fire in the window well. Upon arrival, they found heavy smoke coming from the second floor and flames around the window. They prevented the fire from entering the attic space and contained the fire to the second floor bedroom.
Earlier in the day, owner Ruth Sproull had been using a heat-gun to melt paint from a window. Prior to calling the fire department, Sproull attempted to put out the fire herself, something that firefighters don't recommend. The fire is considered unintentional. The structure sustained minimal to minor damage.
The room needs some cleaning and will be closed until next week or so. However, other rooms in the bed and breakfast are fine. Sproull said guests stayed at the bed and breakfast Sunday night and asked if they could return this weekend when they return from Quebec City.
The guests arrived while the fire trucks were still on scene.
Removing paint was part of the final renovations Sproull had been doing. The bed and breakfast opened last spring.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 6 p.m.
