Firefighter denies setting blaze that destroyed vacant house E-mail

   A firefighter for the Barton Fire Department pled innocent in Orleans District Court Thursday, March 4, to a charge of first degree arson.
   Dale Crews Jr., 24, of Orleans was released after paying an $800 deposit on an $8,000 appearance bond.

Flowing sap catches sugarmakers off guard E-mail

   The warm days and the below freezing nights has the sap flowing early this year, catching the sugarmakers off guard. The sap began flowing about three weeks earlier than usual. Sugarmakers across the Northeast Kingdom have been hard at work, jumping right into it unexpectedly early in the season.
   Even though the season has started early, it doesn’t mean the season is going to prove to be better than others. It’s all dependent on weather conditions, explained Dan Ducharme of Northeast Maple Products in Derby, and Bryan Davis of Border Farm Maples in Derby.
