BARTON – They were once shiny and new, just waiting for someone to shell out big bucks to drive them away. After Sunday’s annual demolition derby, held at the Orleans County Fair Grounds, the 92 or so cars were crumbled pieces of junk that were ready to take their final journey – the automobile graveyard.
Some of the cars met their fate early on while others went to the finals. The ones who made it to the finals had a smashing good time and even a few held up long enough for their drivers to walk away with trophies and prizes during the main event.
One the drivers to make it to the finals was Brad Glodgett of Brownington, who has taken part in the derby for seven years. However, this was the first time he ever qualified for the finals. He said he does not have any success secrets, he was just hoping to make some hard hits and survive to the end of the derby.
“There wasn’t much of a game plan,” he said, noting he got his car Saturday evening, just hours before the big event. “It was a rush job.”
Dustin Beauregard of Barton, who won third place at last year’s derby, also made it to the finals.
“Today was a little rougher,” he said of the preliminary heats.  His plan heading into the derby was to save the nose and have fun.
Beauregard and the 90 some other racers were not the only ones having fun. The fans who packed the grandstand and a few dozen more who watched from the sidelines were just as excited as the drivers, and no one seemed to mind the downpour and flying globs of mud.
Dick Gherrien, who runs the derby, said an event like this is the highlight of any fair.
“The motor heads come out and enjoy this,” he said. “They like to see the smashing and crashing. They like to see the hard hits, and we’ve seen plenty of hard hits this afternoon.”
Some cars landed on top of each other, not once but twice, during the first heat.
Gherrien called the men and women who take part in the derby thrill seekers who like to have fun. The finals were still underway as of press time.

Vermonter to be inducted into Motorsports Hall of Fame E-mail
Tuesday, 24 August 2010
Vermont's Ken Squier will be honored August 25 at the Fillmore Detroit as he is inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.  Presenting him for enshrinement will be former CBS Sports President Neal Pilson.
Squier has been selected alongside NASCAR champion Alan Kulwicki, Trans Am champion Jerry Titus and sprint car legend Rich Vogler.  Also in 2010 Hall of Fame class are Jeremy McGrath, the most popular motorcycle rider racer of the 1990s; Dale Armstrong, innovative drag racing crew chief and Joie Chitwood, best remembered for his auto daredevil thrill shows and as the AAA East Coast Sprint Car champion of 1939-1940.
Squier is recognized as one of the great innovators in radio and television motorsports production.  He was one of the originators of the Motor Racing Network beaming NASCAR races across the country via radio.
While in Australia, he discovered a special camera was being used on ocean racing sail boats.  He brought this camera with him to the 1981 Daytona 500 and the in-car camera was born.  He spent 25 years at CBS sports covering not only motorsports but also two Olympics and many other events in the days of CBS Sports Spectacular.  His work with the Daytona 500 brought home an Emmy for CBS.
Squier is president of the Radio Vermont Group that features WDEV AM and FM, the classical station WCVT and WLVB.  In 1960 he created Thunder Road, a high bank mile asphalt track which in 2010 will celebrate its 51st season.
The Motorsports Museum & Hall of Fame is operated by the Motorsports Museum and Hall of Fame of America Foundation Inc. Currently housed in the Detroit Science Center in the Motor City's Museum District, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America features the sculptures and stories of 181 Heroes of Horsepower along with racing and high performance vehicles representing the broad spectrum of America motorsports.
The constantly changing collection features racers from the world of Indy cars, stock cars, motorcycles, drag racing, Can Am, sprint cars, powerboats, truck racing, karts, aviation and even snowmobiles.
The Detroit Science Center is a hands-on museum that inspires its visitors to pursue and support careers in engineering, technology and science.
The Science Center features five theaters, including Michigan's only Chrysler IMAX® Dome Theatre, the Dassault Systèmes Planetarium, the Toyota Engineering Theater, the DTE Energy Sparks Theater and the Chrysler Science Stage; a 9,000 square-foot Science Hall for traveling exhibits; hands-on exhibit galleries focusing on space, life and physical science; the United States Steel Fun Factory; an exhibit gallery just for pint-size scientists; and a Special Events Lobby.
