Tanker owners in ransom talks E-mail

The owners of a Saudi Arabian supertanker hijacked by Somali pirates are reported to be negotiating a possible ransom, according to Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister. Prince Saud al-Faisal said talks were taking place despite official reservations about negotiations with hijackers. Saudi Arabia announced that it would join the international naval taskforce trying to protect the busy shipping lanes off Somalia. Despite the presence of multinational warships, Somali pirates have hijacked scores of merchant ships this year alone - at least three more vessels have been seized since the hijacking of the Sirius Star supertanker at the weekend.

Living in hope by the Channel tunnel E-mail

France and Britain have dropped plans to load Afghan migrants and deport them back to Kabul. Near the French end of the Channel tunnel, hundreds of refugees live in makeshift shelters, hoping to make it across to the British side.

Al-Qaeda number two Ayman Zawahiri condemned US president-elect Barack Obama as a "house negro" and warned him against sending more troops to Afghanistan, in an Internet audiomessage released on Wednesday. He also warned US president-elect Barack Obama against sending more troops to Afghanistan.

Palestinian family evicted from emblematic Jerusalem home E-mail

They lived here for over half a century, but today the al-Kurd family is homeless. Israeli police evicted the Palestinian family from their east Jerusalem home almost two weeks ago, in the wake of a prolonged court battle with Jewish settlers.
