NEWPORT–Jacob Buckles broke two school records on Friday night as the Falcons fell to Milton 55-26 to wrap up their regular season.
"Those records... I've been wanting to beat them all year," said Buckles.
"I have been hoping, hoping, hoping to finally beat them and to do it is awesome. I can't describe the feeling."
"I can't say enough good things about Jacob Buckles," said coach Tim Simoneau. "He is going to the North/South game and there is no reason he shouldn't be in the Shrine game, representing North Country."
The records, in order of occurrence, were for most tackles in a single season (102) and most tackles in a single game (19).
The former record holders are Todd Wright with 98 tackles in a season, and Jason Belisle, 16 tackles in a game.
Both were set during the 1996 season.
Before play got underway, the school, as is tradition, paid tribute to their outgoing seniors.
The members of the class of 2013 are; Jacob Buckles, Jason Hatin, Josh Tompkins, Maxim Maikshilo, David Murray, Colton White, Caleb Prue and Aidan Smith.
As play got underway, North Country was without Caleb Prue and Tyler Sanville, due to injuries.
It was a rough start to the game as Milton went with the on-sides kick and recovered the ball at the Falcon 36.
Jonah Blatt took the hand-off and ran in for the score on the first play of the drive.
After the extra point it was 7-0 Milton.
It worked once, why not try it again, and the Yellowjackets recovered their second on-sides kick in a row.
However, they would fumble and Jeremy Fontaine recovered the loose ball.
Then it was the Falcons turn to fumble the ball and Milton took over, and it was Blatt again, this time from the 31, running it in for the score.
North Country's second drive was far more successful.
Buckles used receivers Connor Hogan, Ryan O'Donnell and Tyler Jenne, along with Hatin's run-game, to march down the field.
It looked like Hogan had a 12 yard reception for a touchdown, but it was called back for illegal formation.
Not a problem.
Buckles then went to Jenne for the 17 yard strike and the Falcons were on the board with 3:46 left in the first.
But the scoring was far from over.
Blatt's third rushing touchdown put the Falcons down 21-6, but they came back to make it 21-12 on Hatin's 29 yard TD run.
Not waiting around Chris McClellan returned the kick 81 yards to make it 28-12.
They then squibbed another one, recovered it, and Geoff Gadbois, who had been quite accurate in his extra-point kicks all game long, ran in from 14 yards out to close the first quarter with Milton up 34-12.
In the second, Blatt scored his fourth and final TD of the game to make it 41-12 with 9:40 left to play.
Milton got the score to 55-12 before Buckles returned the ball from the Falcon 18 to the house to make it 55-18 at the half.
The Falcons added on more score in the fourth quarter, as Buckles hit Hatin with a 31 yard pass to complete the scoring.
Two minutes later Jacob broke the single-season tackling record, following that up with the single game record for good measure.
"The single season record is the most satisfying for me because it shows that you produced every single game, not just one," Jacob said about which record he liked best.
He also spoke about what this season has been like from his point of view.
"It has been a coachable year. We (seniors) tried to show the underclassmen by example, the effort that needs to be put into the game. All I am trying to do is go out there and set an example.
"No matter what happens, always put your heart into it and never give up"
A year of growth through pain ends with the Falcons having an 0-9 record, but Simoneau is proud of his boy's effort this season.
"It was a tough year and we changed a lot. We played hard and we didn't give up.
"I can't say enough about these guys, they're just a wonderful group of kids."
Today will find Simoneau back at work, getting ready for the 2013 campaign
