Chargers Can’t Hang on, Drop Contest to Chelsea 54-42

February 5, 2012

CRAFTSBURY—The Lady Chargers played host to the Chelsea Red Devils Saturday afternoon and after a hard fought contest that saw Craftsbury leading entering the 4th quarter, it was too much Chelsea late as the Devils were able to pull away for a 54-42 victory.
The Red Devils jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before Thalia Thomas knocked down a long 3 pointer to get the Chargers on the board. They would grab their first lead of the contest at 11-10, just before the buzzer when Hattie Brochu scored off a full court lob pass from Iva Wright.
These two teams would trade the lead all afternoon long and Chelsea would go back on top when Whitney Ladd took the ball coast-to-coast for a 14-13 edge. With two minutes to go in the half Craftsbury was rewarded with 4 free throws (2 on a personal foul and 2 on a technical foul). Thomas would knock down 3 out of those 4 shots to get the lead back for the Lady Chargers at 21-20. The visiting team in red would knock down one more basket to take the lead into the half at 22-21.
Emily Jones stretched the lead for the home team to 5 points with a jump shot from the low block at 29-24 with just over two minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. And, with 4 seconds left before the buzzer, Brochu would connect on both ends of a 1-and-1 to put the blue and white of Craftsbury ahead 33-27.
The 4th quarter however belonged to Chelsea, aided by a 7–0 run, they were able to come back and take the lead 34-33 with 5 minutes to go in the game. Jones would foul out of the contest with 2 minutes to go, allowing the Red Devils lead to swell to 4 at 43-39. The Chargers did not go down without a fight, Deirdre Martin-Baker hit 2 from the charity stripe to cut the deficit in half, but it was not enough as Chelsea was able to ice it down the stretch hanging on for a 54-42 win.
Coach Rick Thomas after the game said he was proud of the way his team played against a very tough Red Devils club.
“They are one of the top teams and we had the lead in the 4th quarter. We’ve been working towards a defense that doesn’t give up a lot of points in the paint and we did that tonight.”
Jasmine Braman led the way for Chelsea with a game high 24 points, with Whitney Ladd knocking down 23.
Hattie Brochu had a team-high 16 points for the Chargers, Thalia Thomas added 9, and Deidre Martin-Baker and Emma Spiese chipped in with 6 each.
The loss drops Craftsbury to 6-5 on the season and they will get back to the hardwood tomorrow night when they travel to Canaan for a 5:00 start time.
