Chargers Can’t Hang on, Drop Contest to Chelsea 54-42

CRAFTSBURY—The Lady Chargers played host to the Chelsea Red Devils Saturday afternoon and after a hard fought contest that saw Craftsbury leading entering the 4th quarter, it was too much Chelsea late as the Devils were able to pull away for a 54-42 victory.The Red Devils jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before Thalia Thomas knocked down a long 3 pointer to get the Chargers on the board. They would grab their first lead of the contest at 11-10, just before the buzzer when Hattie Brochu scored off a full court lob pass from Iva Wright.These two teams would trade the lead all afternoon long and Chelsea would go back on top when Whitney Ladd took the ball coast-to-coast for a 14-13 edge. With two minutes to go in the half Craftsbury was rewarded with 4 free throws (2 on a personal foul and 2 on a technical foul). Thomas would knock down 3 out of those 4 shots to get the lead back for the Lady Chargers at 21-20. The visiting team in red would knock down one more basket to take the lead into the half at 22-21.Emily Jones stretched the lead for the home team to 5 points with a jump shot from the low block at 29-24 with just over two minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. And, with 4 seconds left before the buzzer, Brochu would connect on both ends of a 1-and-1 to put the blue and white of Craftsbury ahead 33-27.The 4th quarter however belonged to Chelsea, aided by a 7–0 run, they were able to come back and take the lead 34-33 with 5 minutes to go in the game. Jones would foul out of the contest with 2 minutes to go, allowing the Red Devils lead to swell to 4 at 43-39. The Chargers did not go down without a fight, Deirdre Martin-Baker hit 2 from the charity stripe to cut the deficit in half, but it was not enough as Chelsea was able to ice it down the stretch hanging on for a 54-42 win.Coach Rick Thomas after the game said he was proud of the way his team played against a very tough Red Devils club.“They are one of the top teams and we had the lead in the 4th quarter. We’ve been working towards a defense that doesn’t give up a lot of points in the paint and we did that tonight.”Jasmine Braman led the way for Chelsea with a game high 24 points, with Whitney Ladd knocking down 23.Hattie Brochu had a team-high 16 points for the Chargers, Thalia Thomas added 9, and Deidre Martin-Baker and Emma Spiese chipped in with 6 each.The loss drops Craftsbury to 6-5 on the season and they will get back to the hardwood tomorrow night when they travel to Canaan for a 5:00 start time.
