NEWPORT CITY - Monday, the Newport City Council decided to provide $2,000 in financial assistance to the Indoor Recreation of Orleans County (IROC) event known as the Kingdom Swim, even though Community National Bank foreclosed on the organization's building in Derby. The council also granted IROC's request to use city facilities this summer at no charge.
Phil White, executive director of the organization, jokingly called IROC "Outdoor Recreation of Orleans County."
"We're still in business in some regard and we're organizing what's turned into 27 non-consecutive days of running, biking and swimming events this summer," said White. Events involve Newport City. "What we're looking for is support for Kingdom Swim, which is the big event."
