EDEN, VT - In a resounding vote, the residents of the Town of Eden decided to not have the asbestos mine declared an EPA Superfund site.
After a very brief presentation by Lynn Noah highlighting the issues that were raised at two prior public hearings, the moderator called for a vote. The vote, by paper ballot, had three favoring the designation and 106 in opposition.
Leslie White, who opposed the designation, said there wasn't much left to debate following informational meetings last summer, which were attended by representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Vermont's Agency of National Resources.
“We've held forums for people to understand the issue,” White stated. “The state will continue to monitor the site as they have done for the past three years. They will continue to participate in finding a resolution for this issue, but in what capacity?”
In other business voters approved the proposed select board budget of $357,198, the highway budget of $399,857, and school budget of $2,506,596, without any changes.
There were no contested races.
