Ellen Macomber Young
December 12, 1919-February 7, 2012Our beloved mother, wife and grandmother, Ellen Macomber Young, died in her daughters’ arms on February 7, 2012, at the age of 92 in Denver, Colorado. She was born at home in North Troy, Vermont, on December 12, 1919. Her mother knew the doctor was on his way because she heard the sleigh bells. Ellen adored her brother, Ashley. Together, they had many adventures, running barefoot down the back roads around North Troy and dangling their legs into streams where the fish would nibble on the scabs on their knees. Ellen and Ashley once found a live wire in the barn and sold electric shocks to their friends. Ellen attended the convent school in Newport and Newport High School. During that time, she lived in Newport with her Aunt Arley and Uncle Elroy, on a farm at the at the current location of the Newport Golf Course. Her favorite flowers were Queen Anne’s Lace and Blackeyed Susan, which she gathered in the fields around her beloved home in North Troy.Ellen worked her way through college, attending Green Mountain Junior College, the University of Vermont (B.A.) and Middlebury College (M.A. in French). She taught Latin and French. She was a romantic and an adventurer. She met her future husband, Dr. Eric Young, when they were both teaching at the same school in El Beuf, France. Together, they traveled the world, living in La Paz, Bolivia, Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, Bad Homburg, Germany, Rome, Italy, and Brussels, Belgium. Ellen was a linguist. She spoke fluent French and German, and loved working on her Spanish and Italian. Our mother loved life. She was a gracious lady, with an easy laugh and ready smile. She never let a mess interfere with a good time. She adored her grandchildren, her dogs, and working in her beautiful garden. She was an accomplished seamstress, hand-stitching silk and chiffon prom dresses. She had a great sense of style, and she loved color. Her favorite colors were purple and orange. Most of all, she was a devoted and loyal mother who was always there for us. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eleanor Macomber, her father, Albern Macomber, and her beloved husband, Eric Young. She will be remembered with great love by her daughter Ingrid Young and her husband Robert Hamm and their children Ursula Bowling, Laura Hamm and James Hamm; her daughter Eve Young and her husband Robert Drew and their children Brendan Drew and Nathan Drew; and by her daughter Mary Jo Young and her companion William McMullen and her children Benjamin Apelman and Matthew Apelman. Services will be held in North Troy this summer. Please keep her in your prayers.
