CRAFTSBURY – Fire destroyed a camp located off the Town Line Road Tuesday afternoon.
Craftsbury Fire Chief Walter Gutzmann said firefighters were called to a camp around noon. The camp was owned by Roger Martin. The fire is believed to have started sometime after 10 AM.
State police dispatchers initially toned the Albany Fire Department because they didn’t know where the fire was. The first firefighters on the scene found a fully engulfed hunting camp. They had the blaze under control in about an hour.
“There was definitely some kind of explosion; we don’t know when it took place,” said Gutzmann, who pointed to a piece of roofing in the top of a nearby tree. He doesn’t know if the explosion was a result of the fire or the other way around. “That’s what we’re going to try to determine.”
Orleans Ambulance Service transported Albany Firefighter Jim Jeorg, who was complaining of a breathing problem, to North Country Hospital in Newport.
Gutzmann said Martin had a lot of memories in the camp and that it was insured.
The cause of the fire is unknown but it doesn’t appear suspicious. However, Gutzmann has requested that a state fire marshal investigate the scene.
