Falcon Girls Throttle Northfield 4-2
NEWPORT-The weather was frightful but that did not effect the focus of the North Country Falcon girls as they put together a solid opening season effort knocking off the Northfield Marauders 4-2.The Falcons iced the contest late on Kate Meuiner’s second goal of the contest off a well set up dead ball. NCUHS had a couple good chances early. Senior Cara Worth weaved her way thru the Northfield defense and caromed a shot off the crossbar. Moments later Anna Bingham made a strong rush into Marauder territory getting off a hard shot from the right wing. After consistent pressure from NC, Northfield pulled down a Falcon forward in the penalty area. Kate Meunier calmly ripped a shot to the right of Marauder netminder Victoria Warren for a 1-0 lead. Northfield tied things up with just over two minutes to go in the first half. A direct kick from 22 yards out by Mehgan McMullen hooked into the top of the cage. At 24:44 of the second half Baylee Jacobs blasted a shot to regain the Falcon advantage. This came after sustained pressure was employed by the home team. The key pass was a cross by Anna Bingham. Five minutes later speed paid off for the Falcons. Senior Avery Parsons-Grayson beat the left Northfield fullback to the ball and lofted a quick shot from the right of the net over the goalie for a 3-1 margin for the Falcons. The Falcon’s defense had their say over the next few minutes as Tiffany Morin at fullback and Noelle Pinard at midfield kept the Marauder forwards at bay. The visitors were not done yet however. Northfield connected to keep it very close at 10:19. Falcon goalie Lindsey Geoffrey came out of the net and got a left hand on the shot in a great attempt but enough of the drive got thru for the second NF tally of the day.The rally by NF was cut short however, as the Falcons regained a two goal margin with 6:09 to go. Meunier completed her big night off the setup from Pinard. Pinard collected two assists in the contest. Coach Joe Batista was happy with the performance.”The girls know to score four goals is great. I thought we did a good job trying to knock the ball around and trying to possess the ball. We played a lot of kids today by design. We want to instill confidence in these girls because we will need them down the road.”The result of the dead ball was great although the play didn’t go quite as planed. Joe added, ”Usually we run someone on that back wall. That person doesn’t let the goalie cross to the ball. Something’s going well when we score off the play anyway.” The Falcons outshot Northfield 16-8 with Warren stopping ten for the Marauders. The Falcon’s Geoffrey knocked down 6 shots for NCU.
