NEWPORT–A cold day with a mix of sun and clouds greeted the North Country boys tennis team as they kicked off their season against Mount Mansfield Wednesday afternoon.
With the Falcons and Cougars splitting the six matches, it came down to total games won, and with a 61-57 advantage, North Country picked up the win.
Dave Durivage dropped the first set 2-6, but rallied to take the next two 6-1, 7-5, defeating Dave Poleson in the number one slot.
"Dave's match was all about ebb and flow," said coach Gary Atchinson. "He fought his way through it and toughed it out in the end."
Thomas Durivage, playing at number two, won in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.
Said Atchinson, "It was a tight first set for Thomas, but then he won going away in the second."
In the three hole Travers Parsons-Grayson fell in the first set, won the second, but was overmatched in the third, falling to Bradley Adair.
Maos Knight in the fourth position and Steve Raboin in the fifth both lost in straight sets.
In the lone doubles contest Zach Tweed and Fred Petzoldt had little trouble with their opponents Eric Iverson and Liam Osler, defeating the pair 6-1, 6-1.
"They (Zach and Fred) showed some good promise, and I was impressed with their net play," Atchinson said of his number one duo.
The boys will have their inter-squad play downs today and should have their line-up secured when they travel to Jericho for the rematch with the Cougars on Monday.
