WESTMORE - It takes courage and perhaps more than a little chutzpah to jump into the icy water of Willoughby Lake on one of the coldest days of of the year, and yet that's what people were doing Tuesday as they donned bathing suits, trudged barefoot across the snow-covered ground, and dove in, all for a good cause.
The annual Willoughby Lake Plunge to raise money for the American Cancer Society was held in the bright sunshine of New Year's Day, around 1 PM. Supporters were there to cheer on the brave souls and to offer hot chocolate, blankets, towels and support. Last year, the event hosted 68 "swimmers" and raised $18,000. Tallies are still pending for this year.
If you have the nerve and a warm smile, keep New Year's Day in mind for next year!
