NEWPORT–It was senior day at Prouty Beach for the North Country girls tennis team. Members of the class of 2012, Kelsey O'Donnell, Carlie Diette and Rhiannon Rosamillia were honored by their coach before the game with framed pictures of themselves as a memento for their four years with the team.
The seniors were not the only ones that will be departing from the team, head coach and co-founder of the program Marie George has decided to hang up her coaching racquet after twenty-five years with the team.
"I made the decision to retire so I can stay and enjoy Aprils in Florida, but I will be back in May and will gladly help the team if they need it," said the coach.
She could not have picked a better day to make the announcement as her team won thirteen out of a possible fourteen matches, defeating Spaulding 6-1 and and 7-0 to close out their season with a 6-9 record.
Playing in the number two spot in her first match O'Donnell won 8-1. She took the number one slot in the second and won by the same score.
Rosamillia played at one first and then at two, winning 8-6 and 8-1.
India Bluett defeated Erica Cross twice with score being 8-4 each time.
Carlie Diette shut out her opponent 8-0 in both of her matches.
At the number five position Annie Arcoleo won a close match 8-7 the first time around and Michaela Stanley came in for the second match and earned the 8-6 victory.
Sonya Hinton and Moriah Lafoe ended their season doing the same thing they did for much of the year, winning 8-6 and 8-4.
The only loss of the day came from the number two doubles pair Brianna Grimm and Danielle Therrien. In their first match they fell 8-2, but they rebounded in the second to defeat Jenki Patel and Hannah St. Jean 8-3.
