DERbY - More than 300 came together for the annual Thanksgiving Day community celebration at the Elks Club in Derby. The event was a joint effort between the Elks Club, the First Universalist Parish of Derby Line, the Area Agency on Aging, and many others.
Months of planning and hard work by volunteers paid off with a beautiful celebration. There was live entertainment, rich and colorful autumn decorations, and a magnificent feast. Kitchen staff began preparing the meal Tuesday, which included 265 pounds of turkey breasts, eight gallons of gravy, 140 pounds of potatoes, and 125 pounds of squash. North Country Culinary Arts students contributed 40 pumpkin and apple pies, along with 10 sugar free pies.
During the appetizer, Ken Gordon, the Executive Director for the Area Agency of Aging, stood before the crowd to acknowledge and express gratitude to the numerous volunteers and area businesses that contributed to the event, including Tony Pomerleau and Vista Foods who gave everyone present a gift card.
Gordan expressed appreciation for Frances Dewing. "I want to thank you for all you did for this event," he said. Gordan said that several small but very important donations came in to help make the event possible.
Other contributors included North Country Hospital, RCT, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and others.
