HASKELL BURGLARIZED

DERBY LINE – The Haskell Opera House was burglarized over the weekend.
Lynn Leimer, the opera house manager, said someone came in sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning and made off with close to $500 in donations made to the Haskell.
The donation box was destroyed inside the building to gain access to the cash. Somehow the door to the opera house was opened and police say that there is no sign of a forced entry. Haskell officials said Sunday that they do not know yet if security footage reveals the perpetrator.
Inside the Haskell Opera House, next to the box office window, is a glass box where people make donations for the venue. It had been locked but was broken.
Leimer said that along with the cash were cards that had not been opened and may have held checks for an unknown amount of money.
Leimer is very frustrated by the theft. The Haskell fell into financial trouble with the tanking of the stock market. Leimer and others spend significant time trying to plan how to raise money to save the venue, “And now this?” she asked.
Leimer says the opera house will no longer keep cash on site.
