NEWPORT CITY – A recount that took place at the Orleans County District Court House yesterday showed the Republican Mark Higley did retain his House seat in Montpelier.
Results after November’s election showed Higley had won over his Progressive opponent Katherine Sims 920 to 887.
This time results showed that Higley won 924 to Sims’ 892.
“I respect the results and I congratulate Mark on a successful campaign and wish him the best of luck,” said Sims, who had called for recount. “With a race that close, I think it’s prudent to follow things all the way through.”
Sims felt she owed it to her supporters to make sure every vote was counted.
“I’m thankful that it’s over and I can start planning for January,” said Rep. Higley. “I appreciate all the volunteers who came to Newport to do the recount.”
