Huskies No Problem for Chargers in Twin Bill

CRAFTSBURY – The Craftsbury Academy Lady Chargers hosted the Cabot Huskies Tuesday night as part of a Varsity girls/boys twin-bill between the two schools. The Chargers started off slow, but once the team settled into the game, they never looked back.
They led at the end of 1 by a score of 11-7, with 5 different players scoring points for the blue and white. But, it was the 2nd quarter that blew the game wide open. Craftsbury held the Huskies to just a single point, while they torched the hardwood by pumping in 16, including 8 by Hattie Brochu, to build a 27-8 halftime lead.
The 3rd quarter didn’t fare much better for Cabot, as they were held scoreless until the final 20 seconds of the period when Brittany Houghton connected on a baseline leaner. The Chargers however scored another 12 points, to swell the lead to 39-10.
With the game well in hand Craftsbury continued to battle and run their offense in the 4th quarter. They outscored Cabot 11-5 in the final frame, including 7 points from Freshman Meghan Brown, to seal the 50-15 victory.
Hattie Brochu paced the Chargers with 16, while Emma Spiese also reached double-digits with 10 points.
Kelly Gochey led the Huskies with 8 points.
The win moves Craftsbury to 2-3 on the season, matching their win total from last years 2-18 season. Coach Rick Thomas, after the game was pleased with the way his team played. “They [Cabot] ‘zoned’ us all night and we were able to pick it apart find the seams. We seemed to be more explosive and energetic from the press, so we played it until the 4th quarter. And all in in all it was a well-played victory.”
Craftsbury will look to get back to the .500 mark when they host Richford Saturday, with a tip-off set for 5:30
In the second half of the double header, the boys met up later in the evening, with Craftsbury pulling away easily, winning 81-27.
It was a back and forth 1st quarter with the Chargers having a hard time working through the Huskie pressure, but an Anthony Putvain lay-up with 3 minutes to go in the first gave Craftsbury a 12-11 lead that they would never look back from. And at the end of 1, the Chargers were on top 20-13.
The game was blown wide open in the 2nd quarter with the blue and white outscoring Cabot 18-6, to build a 21 point, 38-19 lead. The Huskies were stymied by the Craftsbury Defense as they were held scoreless for a 7 minute stretch that spanned the 1st and 2nd quarters.
The offense kept rolling in the 2nd half as the Chargers outscored the Huskies 43-9, including a 21-2 outburst in the 3rd quarter, to push the lead to 59-21 and a 22-6 burst in the 4th the put the game way out of reach at 81-27
Andrew Marckres pumped in 17 points to lead the way for the Chargers and Alex Vetere recorded a school-record 17 assists in the winning effort.
Camden Celley reached double-digits with 10 points for the Huskies.
Craftsbury (5-0) remains perfect on the season and they will look to continue the unbeaten streak, when they host Richford Saturday night. Tip-off is set for 7:30.
