JAY - Jay Peak Resort would like its own health clinic.
The resort is in the process of buying the Snowline Lodge, located just east of the resort entrance on VT Route 242. Potential plans are to turn it into a health clinic.
Jude and Ursula Smith have owned the property for 26 years, and Jude said they are very happy about the sale. The closing is scheduled for May 1.
The clinic would be used by anyone injured at the resort, or anyone in the Jay and Montgomery area in need of care. It would provide orthopedics and general health care with a staff of about 15, said Bill Stenger, resort co-owner.
Resort officials have informed the Jay Select Board of the plans, but nothing official has been filed yet.
Stenger estimated that when approximately 5,000 people are on the mountain on a Saturday in the winter, an average of six might be injured and in need of care. Currently people in need of medical care are transported to North Country Hospital or another nearby hospital. The Dartmouth Helicopter also has a place to land in the village if required. The resort has a good working relationship with area hospitals, Stenger noted.
There is no price tag on the project yet, but Stenger plans to tap into the Federal EB-5 program to pay for the clinic. The EB-5 Foreign Investor Visa Program allows for those wishing to live in the United States to invest $500,000 in an area with high unemployment in exchange for a green card for themselves and immediate family members.
The program has already funded the multi-million dollar expansion at the resort and is being tapped into for other development plans.
The resort continues to move forward with expansion. There is a new ice arena and water park. Additional plans call for even more expansion including mountain bike trails.
Stenger says the new clinic would be very beneficial in moving forward with the growth in the area.
