NEWPORT CITY – Thanks to Gilman Property Management, the affordable housing crunch is about to improve.
Gilman is nearing completion of the Lakebridge Project at the former Sleeper Place site. During of tour of the complex Wednesday, Diana Beleau, marketing specialist for Gilman, said the project is set to be ready Nov. 1. It will hold a community open house Friday, Nov. 2, from 1-6 p.m.
Construction crews have been working hard at replacing and renovating the former complex, which used to have 14 units, with 21 energy efficient units in five buildings.
“With this property we’re hoping to have a new standard in affordable housing,” said Beleau. “All of the apartments are considered affordable so the rent is based on the household’s income.”
The property will have green building standards and modern appliances like dishwashers and glass top stoves, something Gilman doesn’t have in all of its properties.
Most utilities are included in the rent for the one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. The size of the family determines how many bedrooms a tenant may have. A single tenant cannot have a two-bedroom or three-bedroom unit.Residents displaced during construction of the project had the first opportunity to return to the block, but most chose not to. Gilman Property Management has filled the one-and three-bedroom apartments, but still has some two-bedroom apartments.
“There is absolutely a need for affordable housing in this area,” said Beleau. “Typically we had a high unemployment rate in this area, so that creates a huge need for affordable housing.”
This complex is the last vacant property in Gilman Property Management’s cluster of apartment buildings.
Beleau said the waiting list to get in any Gilman building is growing every day.
“We wish we could meet the demand that is out there,” said Bealeau. “Hopefully, we’ll get there.”
Anyone, no matter where he or she lives, is encouraged to apply to be on the waiting list.
The Lakebridge Property is an ideal location for tenants because many services are close by and the RCT Bus stops next door.
“It’s really a great location,” said Beleau. “We’re lucky to have this opportunity.”
