A KISS AT JAY
JAY - Jay Peak Resort has always been a popular spot for weddings, but now with all the new facilities and amenities, that popularity has exploded. The resort has unveiled plans to build a wedding and special events facility. The Jay Planning Commission and Zoning Board held a hearing on the proposal Monday evening. The board unanimously approved the plans, but the approval is contingent upon the Jay Fire Department being comfortable with the plans. Jay Peak wanted to call the building a wedding chapel, however the town of Jay approved it as a wedding and special events facility as it does not resemble a church and it is not designed for any specific religion, explained Peter Fina, Chair of the Jay Planning and Zoning Commission. Upon approval form the Jay Fire Department, the resort will have clearance from the town to move forward to the next step. The facility will be located between the tee of the first hole and the green of the ninth hole of the golf course. The location was chosen for its scenery, its central location and easy access. Resort officials say they anticipate breaking ground late this fall. The facility would accommodate approximately 200 guests. Its dimensions are 84 feet by 69 feet, and 30 feet tall.So far, for this year’s wedding seaon, Jay Peak Resort has hosted 33 weddings with most held outside. The new Hotel Jay has a conference center that can comfortably hold upwards of 400 people and is a popular wedding reception spot, as is the resort’s Tram Haus Lodge, the summit, and other locations. The new building will add another venue for guests to choose, and the resort hopes to host between 70-80 weddings throughout the entire year, JJ Toland, with Jay Peak Resort said. Providing wedding destinations spots are a recession proof business, Toland noted, adding that brides and grooms are always willing to spend to make their special day as nice as possible. Toland also said that weddings are more and more popular at Jay Peak due to all the activities available such as skiing and snowboarding, the ice area, the indoor water park, pools, golf course and tram that brings guest up the mountain throughout the year.
