GLOVER–If you are a fan of both North Country and Lake Region baseball, things could not have turned out any better for you than they did on Saturday.
In the 10-U Cal Ripken District Tournament, three teams were vying for two spots at the State Championship to be held in Glover next weekend.
Lake Region, the host team, automatically qualified based on their status as tourney hosts, so it was between North Country and Three Rivers to see who would fill the final slot.
LR and NC squared off in the opening game, a 13-3 four inning win for Lake Region.
Next up for the host team was Three Rivers, whom they dispatched 12-1, setting up what really amounted to the championship game between North Country and Three Rivers.
This one was quite the high scoring affair.
North Country blew away their opponents from the south, scoring 24 runs in five innings to get the 24-14 win.
So now it was Lake Region and North Country in a “winner and loser get to play again next weekend” championship match.
The two teams were close in the game’s early stages with neither team getting much going, but then the Lake Region bats got hot, as the team scored 15 runs en route to the 15-1 win over their rivals from the north.
Now here is where things get a little funky, and I will let Commissioner Bernie Gonyaw describe it.
"Even though Lake Region won the district, as the State host team, North Country will be seeded as the distinct representative in the State Tournament and Lake Region will be seeded as the host team."
The State's will begin this Friday at 6:00 at the Glover Rec. Fields, with Bennington County facing North Country and Lake Region squares off against the district two champ.
Before North Country gets underway, they have a little obligation to attend to in Burlington.
The team will be on Centennial field with the Lake Monsters on Thursday night and WCAX will be covering the event
