ORLEANS–The second game of the season didn’t follow the same script as the first one did, as the Ranger boys fell to the Lamoille Lancers by a 3-2 score.
The Rangers came out of the gate strong as Josh Thibault corralled a Caleb Royer throw-in and banged it in the back of the net for a 1-0 Lake Region score, just 24 seconds into the contest. But the rest of the contest wouldn’t be as easy for the Rangers. The Lancers would score twice in the first half to go into halftime leading by a score of 2-1.
Towards the end of the first half, Senior Caleb Royer had to leave the game because of any injury. This resulted in Coach Tom Evans drastically altering his line-up for the start of the second half. Keeper Alex Beauregard came out of net and took Royer’s spot on the defensive line and Dennis Newland got his first taste of Varsity action and filled the void in goal.
The start of the second half didn’t go the way that the Rangers had hoped for. Lamoille took advantage of a hole in the Rangers defense and went ahead 3-1 with 30 minutes remaining in the game. That was the point in the game when things began to turn, for better and for worse. On the good end, the goal seemed to wake-up the Rangers offense, but it also raised the both intensity and the level of physicality. Both teams were handed numerous yellow cards during in the duration second half.
The Rangers offense seemed to be clicking on all cylinders for the last 25 minutes of the game, but things wouldn’t go their way. Shots wouldn’t make their way to the net, passes were tipped away by defenders and the time on the clock was slowly ticking away. The Rangers thought they had cut the lead down to one with 11 minutes to go in the game, when Alex Beauregard scored from 12 yards out, but the goal was taken away by the referee on a very questionable off-sides call. This call continued to ignite the fire that was burning inside the Rangers and less than a minute later they got their goal back. Carl Oberg took the pass from Josh Thibault and scored from 25 yards out cutting the Lamoille lead down to 3-2. Lake Region mounted a furious comeback in the latter stages of the game, including 3 shots in the last 15 seconds, but they were denied on all 3 attempts.
While the team played well over the last 25 minutes of the game, Coach Evans was still displeased with his team’s effort. “The first 65 was just again: no cohesion, no continuity, and no communication. We just have to get better.”
With the loss Lake Region moves to 1-1 on the year and will look get back to their winning ways as they head to the road to take on the Peoples Academy Wolves, in Morrisville. The game is scheduled for Thursday, September 8th, with kick-off at 4:30.
