DERBY, VT - The North Country Union Junior High School has embarked on an ambitious project to create a walking path that will start behind the school and will border the soccer fields, providing a nice view of the elk farm and Derby Pond. With a $10,000 fund available through a VEHI Path to Wellness program, which awards matching funds to schools for innovative projects, the Wellness Committee is engaged in fund-raising to pay the balance of the costs. Total cost for the project is estimated at $31,500, which works out at $9 per foot of pathway.Lake Hills Landscaping has provided an estimate of the cost, which will allow for a path that will be dug three feet deep and use stay-mat in the pathway. The pathway will be available for public to use and will provide a safe walking area for community members.A variety of fund raising projects are planned including a coin drop and rummage sale. Just this past weekend, a basket sale was held. The committee will create plaques noting businesses and individuals who donate money to help make the walking path a reality. At $9 per square foot, you can buy a number of feet of pathway and have your business name or the name of your family commemorating the donation.Tax deduction donations can be made payable to NCUJHS Wellness Committee and mailed to Joyce Lantagne, 57 Junior High Drive, Derby, VT 05829.The NCUJHS board enthusiastically supports the wellness project and voted to allow the $10,000 grant to be used to kick start the program. One of the committee members, Josee Brandstetter, is the school nurse and has been a driving force promoting healthy lifestyles, including the creation of a community garden to provide fresh vegetable snacks for the students.
