NEWPORT–Newport City and Derby squared off on Monday night for the Babe Ruth 12-U Softball League Championship in Gardner Park, and with a 5-run outpouring in the bottom of the 6th inning, Newport City was able to wake away with a 7-3 win and the championship trophy.
"The girls take three to four innings to get going, it has been an on-going thing all year, but they usually come out late in the game to prevail," said NC coach Eric Cotnoir.
Said Derby coach Sean Selby about the game and his team's season, "I am proud to death of the girls. They gave their heart, especially from where we came from at the beginning of the season. They worked together as a team and did everything we asked as coaches. They're a great group of girls to coach and I am proud to be a member of the team. They did a great job."
