NEWPORT CITY – Main Street will be alive with holiday cheer this Saturday, as Newport kicks off the holiday season with its "Magic on Main" celebration.
First, deserving families will enjoy a complete holiday meal at the East Side Restaurant. The annual holiday dinner sponsored by Burlington Real Estate Developer and Newport native Tony Pomerleau is by invention only.
It's nice to have a day of entertaining and fun to keep everyone in the downtown area said Andy Cappello, director of The Newport Recreation Department.
Families and community members are welcome to spend the afternoon and evening making cherished memories with their children.
Waterfront Cinema kicks off the afternoon with the showing of two children’s movies starting at 2:30 p.m. The movies, Happy Feet II and Arthur’s Christmas, are free for children under 11 and a minimal fee for anyone over 12. After the film, Santa Clause will visit the children at the cinema.
City personnel will block off Main Street from 3 p.m. until around 7 p.m. so families can enjoy activities like wagon rides and a visit with Santa Clause. The Goodrich Memorial Library will hold a tree lighting ceremony at 3 p.m. There will be bell ringers to join the holiday cheer, and cookies, cocoa, coffee, and crafts will all be available.
For the rest of the afternoon families will be able to decorate cookies at the former Landing Clothing store and children will be transformed into holiday characters at the Community National Bank. For sports enthusiasts a trading card show will take place at the Municipal Building from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Bingle Jells, a comedy entertainment show featuring the Kingdom Dixie Band and sponsored by The Memphremagog Arts Collaborative, will wrap up the night at the Gateway Center at 7 p.m.
"Magic on Main" is a great recreational activity, Cappello said. “It’s an opportunity to take advantage of the deals the stores will be having and it’s nice way to spend the afternoon and evening.”
