NEWPORT–In senior baseball action Sunday, the Newport Thunder Dogs defeated the Caledonia Bucks 6 to 5.
The Thunder Dogs jumped out to a 3 to nothing lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning with a walk to Jamie Fourner and base hits from Eric Trucott, Scott Burdick, Doug Oliver, and Brian "Bear" White.
The Bucks answered with a run in the 5th inning, but Newport got that run right back in the 6th when Oliver lead off with a double off the right center field fence, followed by a single by Bear and a fielder’s choice RBI by Scott Wing.
The Bucks pushed 2 more runs across the plate in the top of the 7th inning and one in the top of the 8th to tie the score 4 - 4.
Oliver lead off the 8th inning with a solo home run, this time clearing the center field fence, putting the Thunder Dogs up 5 - 4. The Bucks would not quit, as they charged right back tying the game in the top of the 9th inning, and hoping to head into extra frames.
However, the Thunder Dogs had other plans.
With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th inning base hits from Bruce White, Jamie Fourner combined with a mis-cue by Caledonia, put runners on second and third. Oliver received an intentional walk to load the bases, and starting pitcher Bear White knocked in the the game winning RBI with a single.
The Thunder Dogs are 4 - 1 on the season, with their next game at Gardner Park on Sunday June, 26th at 12:00.
