BOSTON – Derby native Nicholas Wheeler made the region proud, yesterday, by finishing 35th in the Boston Marathon. Wheeler, now of Rockland, ME, finished the 26.2-mile marathon in 2:33:30.
The Boston Marathon is a world-class competition that draws tens of thousands of athletes from around world.
Wheeler is no stranger to marathon competition. Last fall he finished ninth in the Philadelphia Marathon.
Wheeler, a 2004 graduate of North Country Union High School, was a member of the school's track team and cross country team.
Wheeler and his twin brother Curtis use to run with their father Scott Wheeler.
“They started running very young,” said Scott. “They never looked back. That was their love.”
"It was a very good day,” Wheeler said in a telephone interview yesterday afternoon. “I’m very happy.”
Wheeler had been preparing for the marathon for the past several months. This includes running 100 miles a week.
Yesterday, because of the warm weather conditions, Wheeler drank water and Gatorade every mile. After the race, Wheeler said he felt tired and sore.
“We are very happy,” said Scott Wheeler. “Even if he came in dead last, we would have been just as proud. If you can run 26 miles, that’s quite an accomplishment.”
Boston television stations reported on Facebook that more than a dozen runners were hospitalized and a dozen others were treated at the medical tent.
The family would have been proud of their son even if he had decided not to run at all because of the extraordinary warm temperatures, Scott Wheeler said.
